Bob Batson's Checklist for a Good EV Conversion Is it safe? Batteries should be in a strong box. Is it reliable? A 48-volt system is too weak to deliver power. Is it professional? Wires should be tied in place, not hanging. Is it too cheap to be true? It probably is, since it probably is using surplus or used parts. |

Bob Batson's tip: Look for an EV conversion where it's clean, the area is clear and there are no hanging wires. Does it look professional? |
One way to get into an EV is to get a Neighborhood EV, which has a top speed of 25 mph, legal on streets that have a speed limit of 35 mph. |

The maximum theoretical efficiency of the typical gasoline engine is about 30 percent; diesels are about 35 percent efficient. But in real-world driving conditions, both numbers drop significantly. Only a tiny fraction of the energy in a gallon of gasoline actually ends up doing useful work — the rest is wasted as heat. In contrast, electric vehicles are far more efficient than conventional cars. The motors of EVs exceed 90 percent efficiency, and their batteries are better than 85 percent efficient. In addition, some EVs have regenerative braking that can recapture as much as 30 percent of the vehicle’s kinetic energy to recharge the battery. Because they have fewer parts and are so much more efficient, EVs cost much less to operate. The topic will be oil dependence.” With these opening words, Freedom from Oil takes the reader to the highest levels of government, as Cabinet members and White House aides debate how to break our addiction to oil. In a fast-moving narrative, David Sandalow shows how to solve this problem while offering a unique window into the White House at work. A White House veteran, Sandalow explores what would happen if the next President made breaking the United States' addiction to oil a top priority. In crisp and clear prose, Sandalow explains the size of the challenge and then offers a powerful message of hope. “This issue unites Americans,” he writes. “Game-changing technologies are at hand.” Plug-in cars, biofuels and measures to improve traffic are all part of the solution. Throughout the book, profiles of fascinating individuals help bring serious policy dialogue to life. From the commander of U.S. forces in western Iraq to a grandmother in northern Alaska to an electric car entrepreneur to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, Freedom from Oil is filled with stories of people whose lives have been touched by oil dependence-and are working to find solutions. Drawing on both his government experience and energy expertise, Sandalow depicts the President's top advisers as they explore options, shape solutions and create national policy, culminating in an inspiring speech by the President to the nation. Comments about Freedom from Oil “When David Sandalow writes about energy and the environment, we should all pay close attention.”-Al Gore “Freedom from Oil is a compelling analysis of one of the great challenges of our time. David Sandalow draws upon his extensive White House experience and offers a powerful vision of a clean energy future.”-William J. Clinton, 42nd President of the United States “David Sandalow's Freedom from Oil should be required reading for all concerned citizens and elected officials.”-U.S. Senator Richard G. Lugar(R-IN), from the Foreword “One of the clearest, most innovative approaches to energy that has been written. A superb combination of policy and politics, cast in highly readable government policy and memo format. Every American should read David Sandalow's book.” -General Wesley Clark “Superb analysis and recommendations that show how we can break our dependence on oil without further dithering. The next Administration, or this one, could do no better than to go with Sandalow's package.” -R. James Woolsey, Vice President Booz Allen Hamilton; former director, Central Intelligence Agency “Freedom from Oil should be at the top of the reading list for America's next president . . . This is an important book for anyone concerned about the most pressing threat to our security, our economy and our environment.” -Frances Beinecke, President, Natural Resources Defense Council (the above material comes from the McGraw Hill web site) ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
Opportunity for an Entrepreneur: Work with an established conversion kit maker, like Bob Batson or Electro Auto, and identify vehicles that are "ripe for conversion." Ideal candidates are vehicle models that don't change from year to year. For example, the chassis of the VW Rabbit didn't change for over ten years. ATTENTION: AUTO ENGINEERS! Are you an engineering student? A professor in a department that produces automotive engineers? Many schools of engineering compete in contests involving ground-up design of solar powered vheilces (Solar Car races). How about spending the same effort in developing conversion kits for popular cars, such as the Ford Taurus, Honda Civic, and other vehicles that Shari Prange and others could suggest? Automotive Engineering During your automotive engineering studies, you’ll examine the operating principles of the mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems of automobiles. You’ll pick up the specialized vocabulary that accompanies these systems so you can throw around terms like “transaxle” with true authority. You’ll gain an insider’s understanding of the automotive industry and learn the technological issues involved in designing and marketing cars as you take an in-depth look at the materials, manufacturing, ergonomics, and design testing that are the basis of automotive engineering. The automotive industry is challenging and exciting, and your automotive engineering major will give you the skills you need to make a worthwhile contribution to it. You’ll become familiar with the nuts and bolts of automobiles, so to speak, so you’ll be able to identify and solve problems with current systems, as well as to design new ones that are reliable, functional, and innovative. Some programs combine automotive engineering with courses in mechanical engineering, so be sure to research your prospective programs carefully if you think this is something you might like. (from the Princeton Review about engineering programs) =============== For example... UT Austin automotive engineering students win national award March 30, 2001 A formula-style race car and a 1937 Chevy were among the components of a prize-winning display by a team from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) student chapter at The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering. Students from Houston, Austin, Pflugerville and El Paso participated. This was a competition involving a gasoline-powered car. Why not do a simliar project with a standard commuter vehicle? Go for range, not top speed. ============================================== The true cost of the conversion must include scores of design hours Shari Prange, ElectroAuto, describes the difficulty facing the conscientious EV converter. "When we designed the kit for the VoltsRabbit(TM), we were lucky: the chassis was unchanged for more than ten years." Nowadays, the chassis of a typical car model can go through minor changes every two or three years, yet those alternations are enough to make a battery box not able to fit. This means that a kit developed for a Honda Civic or a Toyota Tercel might work for three or four model years, but then design costs would increase when the model changes. The big problem is fitting the battery box in a conversion after the model changes. The cost of the VoltsRabbit(TM) kit is spread over more than a hundred conversion projects. Shari has estimated that the labor of a VoltsRabbit(TM) might be $5,000 but a conversion of another car, including the scores of hours of trial and error designwork, could be $15,000 ($10,000 for the design work and testing of new components, and $5,000 for installing the new kit). |
Associations Florida should be a leading market for converted EVs -- the distances are fairly short (under 40 miles for a typical day of driving) and there are few hills. If you buy an EV, you can join the FL EAA and show your vehicle at upcoming events.
