Facts about the Black Capped Chickadee

The Black-capped chickadee is a gray and black ball of fluff weighing just a third of an ounce. This 5 inch bird is distinguished by a distinct black cap, black bib, white cheek marks, buff-colored flanks, and a long tail. Male and female look alike. They eat insects, fruit and seeds. They are very curious and quick-moving and can change directions in midair. They build their nests about 4 to 10 feet above the ground. Usually, they lay between 6 to 8 white eggs with reddish brown spots. About 13 days pass before the eggs hatch. Both parents feed the young during the 2 week nesting period. Plant coniferous shrubs and trees and you’ll have these little chickadees.

In our yard, the Black-capped chickadee is very friendly. Sometimes they will let you stand right beside the bird feeder and watch them eat. They may even turn around and talk to you. Many backyard gardeners train the bird to eat out of their hand.
