Facts about the Buckeye Butterfly

This distinctive butterfly is well known for the large eyespots on its upper side. The Buckeye is primarily a southern species although it emigrates north in the summer. It cannot withstand northern winters, however, so is a resident only in the southern part of its range. It likes to bask on bare ground and will return again and again to the same spot. It has a rapid, darting flight. Males visit mud puddles for moisture. Its caterpillar’s favorite host plant is snap dragons and toadflax. Their favorite nector plants are aster, knapweed and chicory.
