Facts about the Cooper's Hawk
Cooper’s Hawks like to sit atop our tallest trees and prey on our backyard birds. They are big birds. Not quite crow size. The male has a blue-gray back and a chestnut-striped belly and breast. Its tail is rounded at the tip. Their main diet is other birds, with some small mammals thrown in for good measure. They’re among the swiftest of the hawks, and they can twist and turn in midair. They like to stay mostly in and along the edges of woods. But in winter,m they turn up in backyards wherever there are bird feeders. They sometimes adopt a route of feeders, going from one to the other. You can always tell when there’s a hawk around. The backyard gets deathly quiet and not a bird in sight.
