Facts about the Variegated Fritillary Butterfly
This tawny butterfly is common throughout the South, and it extends its range into most northern states during the summer. The Variegated Fritillary is generally on the wing from early spring to late fall, sometimes longer in the Deep South. This butterfly cannot survive the northern winters, however, and thus the emigrants die each year. This butterfly is a fast blier, usually along a low plane. It has a wide range of host plants including violets, passion vine, and stonecrop. Its favorite nectar plants are Butterfly weed, clover, shepherd’s-needle and milkweed.
