The Pigeons At The Library
Includes a reproducible fact and coloring sheet
This program originated in September 1990 when preschool groups returned to the public library each week for a program. The pigeons were interesting to see with their babies. Unfortunately, the children only found out about mom feeding her babies when I told them about the bird family progress during the weekly programming. As cold weather approached in October, the babies began dying because mom couldn't hunt for food and keep her children warm at the same time. I decided to start feeding and filming the family. I filmed each day and developed a real show for the children visiting the library. The first question most children ask me during a program is where the library got the pigeons. One reason for that question is because the Daddy in the film is a banded racing pigeon. I found the answer for the children and you can read all about it. Now after seven years of research, you can read the book to children and then watch the movie.
Gordon's Story is available separately. This video tells the story of how the first pigeon came to roost at the library and why he decided to stay and make his home in Smithfield, North Carolina.
