Laboratory Safety

 General Safety
1.  Follow all instructions carefully.
Use special care when you see the word letter CAUTION.
2.  Never run, push, or engage in horseplay or practical jokes of any kind in the laboratory.
3. Report all accidents or injury to your teacher immediately.
4.  Wear safety goggles when using chemicals, hot burners, or preserved specimens or when performing any activity which could result in eye injury.
5.  Dress appropriately for the activity.  It may be necessary to tie back long hair, to roll up sleeves, or to remove outer sweaters or jackets.

Chemical Safety
1. Never taste or touch substances in the laboratory without specific instructions to do so.
2.  Use materials only from containers that are properly marked.
3.  Never smell anything without specific instructions.  Do not directly inhale fumes.  Wave the air above the substance toward your nose and sniff carefully.
4 . Wash your hands after using chemicals.
5.  Notify your teacher immediately of all spills.
6.  Always wear goggles when working with chemicals.

Electrical Safety
1.  Be certain that all plugs make solid contact with the outlet.
2.  Never put in a foreign object into outlets.
3.  Never remove a plug by pulling all the wires.
4.  Avoid spilling, splashing, or dropping any fluids onto an electrical joint.
5.  Report any frayed or damaged wires to your teacher.
6.  When extension cords are in use be careful not to step on them, tripped over them, or set a chair upon them.

Heat and Fire Safety
1.  Never leave a lit flame or any hot object unattended.
2.  Never reach over and exposed flame.
3.  Always use tongs or potholders to handle hot lab equipment.
4.  Never allow flammable materials such as alcohol or paper near an open flame.
5.  Never point the mouth of a test tube toward anyone while it is heating.
6.  Always wear goggles when heating objects.
7.  Before beginning, think about what steps you would follow to extinguish an unplanned fire.

Equipment Safety
1.  Do not use chipped or cracked glassware.
2.  Do not force glass tubing or the thermometers into stoppers.
3.  Do not pick up broken glass with your bare hands.
4.  Use care in handling all sharp equipment.
5.  Report all breakage to your teacher immediately.
6. When transporting test tubes in a rack use both hands and support the top and the bottom  of the rack.
