It is not surprising that these polygons fit together without gaps because they are polyiamonds. There are two shapes in this tiling, both made up of groups of equilateral triangles. The 6-point star is made up of 48 triangles. The S-shape is made up of 26 triangles. The rotation symmetry point for the S-shape consists of 3 versions of the shape 120 degrees apart.
