Other Old Testament Issues
The Scientific issues were fun to go
through. As you will see, I didn't have all the answers,
but my imagination can run wild with some of these!
Creation & Science Conflicts
Genesis has two conflicting accounts of the creation. Genesis 1:1-31; 2:1-3 is the first source, and Genesis 2:4 begins the second source. There are two conflicting genealogies for Adam. In Genesis 4:1-26, Cain and Abel are said to be the first sons of Adam. But in the second source, Genesis 5:1-32, Seth is said to be the first son of Adam, Cain and Abel are not even mentioned!
I don’t see where the genealogy is wrong because in the second genealogy, it simply draws the line down through Seth and not Cain. And it doesn’t claim Seth is the first son of Adam. It just gave Adam’s age at time of birth of Seth.
Gen 1:11-12, 26-27 Trees were created before man was created.
Gen 2:4-9 Man was created before trees were created.
Gen 1:20-21, 26-27 Birds were created before man was created.
Gen 2:7, 19 Man was created before birds were created.
Gen 1:24-27 Animals were created before man was created.
Gen 2:7, 19 Man was created before animals were created.
Gen 1:26-27 Man and woman were created at the same time.
Gen 2:7, 21-22 Man was created first, woman sometime later.
I see Genesis 2 as in 2 sections and being more detailed then the first generalized version, the first being about the creation of Adam, the second being about the creation of the other living beings. There is no chronology given in the 2nd chapter, vs 19 says God had formed the animals-past tense, in this verse, God simply brought the animals to Adam. Again Eve was created after man. Chapter 2 simply tells what happened before Eve, chapter 1 just gave a summary. You know, kind of like paragraphs, first sentence should give the “hint” of what the rest of the paragraph contains, the middle is the detailed narrative and the final sentence should wrap up all that was said. At least, that’s what my English teachers taught me.
I also see Genesis written where it finishes a story and then can go back into time and continue on a different strand. If you don’t understand, then read JRR Tolkien’s Trilogy and see how it’s done. Or actually any book that tells more than one line of plot will do the same!
Deut 14:7 Rabbits chew their cud
Haven’t checked this out scientifically yet, but I had a rabbit that
would sit in my lap, no food, and whatever reason, would many times start
chewing on something. If this wasn’t a “cud”, then please tell me what
it was.
Deut 14:11-18, Lev 11:13-19 Bats are birds
It doesn’t call bats birds, it just listed them with the birds. And
back then, bats might have been considered birds, it wasn’t until lately
that scientists told us that they were mammals. Let’s see-mammals have
hair, birds fly with wings. Seems to me they fit both categories. Where
do you think God classifies them? It’s His creation, He decides!
Gen 3:14 Snakes are cursed to crawl on their bellies and eat dust
If a snake doesn’t get dust in its mouth, and some of that doesn’t get
into its system, I’d be impressed. Even I who walks upright still gets
dust in my mouth, could you imagine if we crawled on our bellies how much
more than!
Gen 1:16 God made two great lights, one to rule over the day, the other
the night (moon is seen at day too)
It says He made two lights, not two light makers. If He designed it
for the moon to shine light by reflection, does that make it less of a
light? And I’ve known of many rulers that visit other countries, but are
still king of their region, even though out of the country for that time.
Gen 1:16 God made the sun, then the stars (same as sun, but many are
millions of years older)
Are you absolutely positive? Have you gone to the sun and stars, collected
rocks and then do a C-14 dating on them? And what about all those inconsistent
datings I’ve heard about? Did you know that only 1% of the earthometers
(I think that’s the correct name!) have dated the earth 4 billions years
old? More than 1% says that it’s only a few thousands years old and many
more give any and just about every age in between! But anyway, it just
says He made the sun and the stars, didn’t say which one first.
Luke 24:13-33 Emmaus is about 10 miles west of Jerusalem, and the two
being visited by Jesus, and the two then go "that same hour"
to the eleven in Jerusalem. This means these guys ran 10 consecutive miles
averaging less than six minutes per mile without stopping for water or
breath...in sandals.
First off, read the passage given. It doesn’t say that they went from
Emmaus arrived in Jerusalem in the same hour....it says they ate in Emmaus
and then left for Jerusalem in the same hour.
1Tim 2:14 Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became
a transgressor.
Exactly! But Adam was there beside her and let her do it. And then tried
to put all the blame on Eve. Just like today, he was told to look out for
her, but he simply stood there and watched her be condemned.
Exod 17:14 God says that he will utterly blot out the remembrances
of Amalek. (That remembrance is now permanently preserved in the Bible.)
Do you have any remembrances of Amalek? This means “memories.” Do you
know any of their tales, customs, rituals, beliefs, daily lifestyles, legends,
genealogy, etc? I don’t...........
Lev 11:20-21 There are winged creatures (birds or insects) that go
around on all fours. (Note: There are no birds that go around on four legs,
and all insects have six legs.)
Do winged insects walk on four legs, or do they walk on all six? And
maybe there were winged creatures that did use all fours!!! Wow, wouldn’t
be neat to some today!
Lev 14:49-53 The cure for leprosy involves incantations and the blood
of a bird.
Hey, being an American Indian, makes me feel a lot better!
1Kings 6:2, 2Chron 3:3 Solomon's temple was only about ninety feet
long by thirty feet wide, and yet --
1Kings 5:15-16 153,300 persons were employed to build it.
1Kings 6:38 It took seven years to build.
1Chron 22:14 13,100,000 lbs. of gold and 116,400,000 lbs. of silver were
consumed in its construction.
1Chron 23:4 24,000 supervisors and 6,000 officials and judges were employed
to manage it.
Can you imagine the details in this place?!?! The size of the rocks,
the tiniest details inscribed in the gold and the other materials! I bet
it was the most awe-inspiring place on earth! No, but realistically, I
believe (without looking it up) the 90x30 was only the Holy of Holies,
not the entire temple court area.
Esther 6:6, Job 19:27, Psalms 7:9, 16:7, 73:21, Prov 23:7, 16, Isaiah
10:7, Jere 11:20, 17:10, 20:12, Matt 9:4, Luke 2:19, 9:47, Acts 8:22, Rom10:9-10,
Heb 4:12, Rev 2:23 (See KJV especially.) Thought occurs in the heart. The
kidneys ("reins") are the seat of conscience.(Note: This is not
merely a poetic use of these terms, as is now claimed. In early times,
it was actually believed that various body organs other than the brain
were responsible for our thoughts, feelings, actions and the like. The
heart was believed to be the seat of thought processes and beliefs, while
the kidneys were thought to be the seat of conscience.)
It is a representation, and don’t let anyone else tell you any different!
It even said so in the Hebrew dictionary! But I tell you what, I still
love my kids with ALL my heart! And I bet you love your spouse with all
your heart too! If not, you might ought to tell them you don’t. And can
you imagine what people who read our books a couple of thousands years
from now will think we believed??? JB 9:6 (KJV) God shakes the earth out
of its place and makes its pillars tremble. The earth is tilted and does
change its degrees. It is on an axis and an orbit. And do you know what’s
inside this earth? Have you seen it, or anyone else? Couldn’t God have
humungous rocks that hold the surface in place? What about the tectonic
plates? What keeps them from sinking? Melted rock? JB 9:7 God can make
the sun not rise and seal up the stars. And why not? I’ll get into the
“rising” and “setting” of the sun later......
Psalms 58:8 Slugs and/or snails melt as they move.
It does "melt"-Hebrew-tememc-dissolutes its substances-where
do you think the slime comes from?
Psalms 121:6 It is apparently possible to suffer moonstroke as well
as sunstroke.
This is simply to show us that not even the smallest thing will hurt
us. You know, like 2 inches of water, eating chicken, getting stung by
a bee.......
Prov 20:30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil.
Ever heard of spanking a child? Read the passage, that’s what it’s talking
about.
Isaiah 11:12, Rev 7:1 The earth has four corners.
Last I heard it did-North, East, West, South-NEWS-But I do often wonder
where God has divided the earth. Of course the north and south are probably
divided on the equator, but where would it make sense for the east and
west? The eastern US coast and eastern China coast? Who knows!!
Isaiah 24:1 (KJV) The earth can be turned upside down so as to scatter
its inhabitants.
This should not be to hard for God to do. If the earth stopped spinning
east to west and started spinning north to south, we would indeed fall
off!!
Isaiah 40:22 The earth is a circle. (Note: The earth is really a sphere,
not a circle, and this verse does not imply a sphere as some believers
like to infer.)
Hebrew circle-”circuit, compass” If the earth was flat here, how could
you make a straight line around the earth as the passage implies?
Dan 4:11 Daniel dreams of a tree so tall that it can be seen to the
ends of the earth. (Note: This implies a flat earth.)
First off, it was Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, not Daniel’s...”end” is coweph-termination.
And God could have put the dream to Neb’s understanding, David repeated
“sight to all the earth”....”all” being typical of “majority.” And to really
make sense of this dream, “earth” here means country or firmament-land,
not the globe.
Amos 8:9 The Sun will be made to set at noon in "clear day."
And why not? But to make it easier than that, God very plainly says
this was a representation. The famine represented His Word, so the sun
probably represents the warmth and light that provides for the food.
Matt 4:8 There is a high mountain from which all the kingdoms of the
world can be seen. (Note: This implies a flat earth.)
The “world” here means the people of the earth. But this passage was
being used in the spiritual sense, something we humans have a hard time
conceiving.
Rom 10:17-18, Colo 1:23 The gospel had already been preached to every
living creature even in Paul's time.
The Word of God is in our hearts and every creature the same. There
are plenty of passages that shows God cares for the animals and provides
for them too. Interestingly enough, He also will hold an animal accountable
for shedding man’s blood, if not more!
2Corin 12:2 There are at least three heavens.
There are actually more. 1st-the sky, 2nd-the universe (though these
are often referred to as one!), then there’s Paradise and then there’s
Heaven as in the abode of God.
Titus 1:12 "One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said,
The Cretians are always liars ...." (Figure the logic of this verse.)
The prophet this passage was talking about was a “deceiving” prophet-”self-proclaimed”.
Always was the word “aei-regularly, earnestly” Nothing wrong with this
passage either.
Ezek 32:7 The (small) Sun can be easily covered with a cloud
It can. But actually, this sounds like it will be a cosmic cloud that
will cover the sun.
Psalms 50:1, 113:3, Isaiah 59:19, Mala 1:11, Eccl 12:2 Sun rises, falls,
and returns Psalms 19:6 Jude 5:31 Sun goes forth from the end of heaven,
and circulates
Okay, how many of you husbands or wives out there has approached your
spouse and said, “Dear, let’s go watch the earth rotate 3 more degrees
so that we can view the sun in its stationary place as the horizon lowers
itself.....”.....oops, there’s no such thing as a true horizon either!!!!!
Now seriously, how are people going to read our literature 1,000’s of years
from now? How confused they are going to think we were? There is no book
I know that talks about the sun rising or setting, except those boring
science books! Just kidding, I love science and am genuinely fascinated
with many scientific things.
Exod 20:4, Deut 5:8 Psalms 24:2 2Peter 3:5 The earth sits in water
Here again is the word for firmament “erets-the firmness”, it means
land and the land does sit in the water. If the water wasn’t below the
earth, then we’d be flooded and being in mid-Missouri, we’ve seen that
happen plenty the past few years!
Isaiah 55:9 Water/snow come from heaven
The heaven used here was “ahameh” which means “the sky”. How is this
wrong in accordance with science? I thought that’s where the rain came
from, the clouds in the sky?
Psalms 33:7 Prov 8:29 Job 26:10, 38:8-9, 30 Water constitutes the earth’s
boundaries
Here again is the word for firmament “erets-the firmness”, it means
land and the land is surrounded by water, again ....If the water wasn’t
around the earth, then we’d be flooded!
Psalms 104:7-9 Man may not pass over the waters bounding the earth
This passage doesn’t say anything about man, it says the waters couldn’t
cross the boundaries God set for them, specifically the mountains!
1Chron 16:30, Psalms 93:1, 96:10 The earth does not move
It doesn’t say the earth, it says the “world” which is in meaning-the
inhabitants. And isn’t that how we use it today--This world sure is in
a mess....Second World War.....
Psalms 102:25, 104:5 Prov 28:8 Zech 12:1 Isaiah 48:13, 51:13-16, Job
38:4 Heb 1:10 Earth has foundations
And doesn’t the land have foundations? The molten rock in the middle
of the globe? Or the land below the sea level.
JB 38:5-40 Man cannot measure the earth
It says nothing about man not being able to measure the earth!!
Job 28:24 Job can see the whole heaven and to the end of the earth
Again, it says nothing able Job seeing the whole heaven and earth, it
says God can! Earth has edges or ends (25 separate references!) [Hebrew
‘epes’ means ‘edge’ and ‘non-existence’] and the earth-firmament- does
have edges where it falls below the water.
Other Old Testament So-called Fallacies
Where did ALL those cattle & horses come from over
and over?
Exod 9:3-6 God destroys all the cattle (including horses) belonging
to the Egyptians.
Exod 9:9-11 The people and the cattle are afflicted with boils.
Exod 12:12, 29 All the first-born of the cattle of the Egyptians are destroyed.
Exod 14:9 After having all their cattle destroyed, then afflicted with
boils, and then their first-born cattle destroyed, the Egyptians pursue
Moses on horseback.
There is no time amount mentioned between the plagues. In Ex 9:9-11, it doesn’t even mention “cattle,” only beasts (cats, dogs, birds, etc). There were 5 plagues from one cattle devastation to only the firstborn being destroyed. Plenty of time here for Pharaoh and other Egyptians to buy cattle from the Israelites and other neighboring countries. As for the last reference, please note ONLY 600 chariots in all of Egypt and Pharaoh had some horsemen. The Egyptians had to replenish their “cattle” twice. By the second time, apparently only Pharaoh had enough money left to replenish.
How old Ahaziah when he started his reign?
2Kings 8:26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign.
2Chron 22:2 Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign.
He succeeded his father, who died at the age of forty. Thus, if Ahaziah
was 42, Ahaziah was two years older than his father.
This is a true translation error. Ahaziah was 22 when he started his reign.
Why the Sabbath?
Exod 20:11 For in the six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the
sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the
Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
Deut 5:15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and
that the Lord thy God brought the out thence through a mighty hand and
by a stretched-out arm; therefore the Lord thy God commanded the to keep
the Sabbath day.
The weekly Sabbath held by Jews on Saturday, commemorates God’s day of rest. This particular High Sabbath mentioned in Deut. was the Passover, to commemorate the Israelites removal from the land of Egypt.
Incest?
Deut 27:22 Cursed is he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of
his father, or the daughter of his mother. -
Gen 20:11-12 And Abraham said... She is my sister; she is the daughter
of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
The Bible never condones Abraham for marrying his half-sister. However, when God gave His law about marrying brothers/sisters, it was many, many years later,( at least 430!!) In the early times shortly after Adam and Eve had been created perfect, there were not many mutilations in our DNA. But by this time, with the inbreeding amongst others, etc, there were definitely a lot of “bad” genes going around. All scientists know that inbreeding these “bad” genes within the same family group will eventually wipe out that family. The “bad” gene would quickly become dominant and all offspring would eventually die out from it.
How many kids did Michal have?
2Sam 6:23 Therefore Michal, the daughter of Saul, had no child unto
the day of her death
2Sam 21:8 The five sons of Michal, the daughter of Saul.
None. Those in chp 21 were not hers, there were Adriel’s (her sister and brother-in law’s). Michal was raising them. They were mentioned here to show the lineage.
How many pairs?
Gen 6:19-22, 7:8-9, 7:14-16 Two or Pairs of each kind [including all
living creatures, male and female, every kind of bird, animal crawling
creatures, clean and unclean, all creatures that have breath in them.]
are to be taken, and are taken, aboard Noah's Ark.
Gen 7:2-5 Seven or seven pairs of some kinds are to be taken (and are taken)
aboard the Ark. [seven of every kind of clean animal, two of every kind
of unclean, seven of every kind of bird.]
Two are to be kept alive. 6 pair of clean animals were used for sacrificial purposes. Seems the 7 pairs of birds was needed to have more to respread seeds upon the earth, thereby promoting plant life.
Which is dad?
Gen 11:12 Arpachshad [Arphaxad] was the father of Shelah.
Luke 3:35-36 Cainan was the father of Shelah. Arpachshad was the grandfather
of Shelah.
Cainan was listed in the Septuagint and has somehow been dropped.
How old was Abram when his father died?
Gen 11:16 Terah was 70 years old when his son Abram was born. (32)
Terah was 205 years old when he died (making Abram 135 at the time).
Gen 12:4, Acts 7:4 Abram was 75 when he left Haran. This was after Terah
died. Thus, Terah could have been no more than 145 when he died; or Abram
was only 75 years old after he had lived 135 years.
It does not say Terah was 70 when Abram was born. It says he was 70 when he became a father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. Now assuming they weren’t triplets, I looked for another example of listing the whole family.....found in Gen 10:1-where Shem, Ham and Japheth were listed for Noah. In vs 21, it says that Shem was younger than Japheth. Thereby concluding that the writers were accustomed to list the youngest first, this makes Terah 70 when Haran was born (and he was first to die!) and by following the rest of the verses, Terah was probably 130 years old by the time Abram was born. And also, in consistency with how Genesis was written, it doesn’t say Terah was dead when Abram moved, it just told he died at the age of 205. Abram could have very well moved before Terah died.
One or many languages before the Tower of Babel?
Gen 10:5, 20 & 31 each [diverse nations of Shem, Ham, Japheth]
with its own language.
Gen 11:1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
One, the tower of Babel happened before all these “nations” came about, after the Babel story, the history of Shem starts only 2 years after the flood. There were at least 400 years worth of genealogy given in the previous chapter. That’s 400 years the tower of Babel story could have happened. it was probably early on since there was no division of language. According to a historian, it was the grandson of Ham, Nimrod, who started the tower of Babel since it was under his reign and he was credited for that type of behavior.
Which are the sons of Eliphaz?
Gen 36:11 The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
Gen 36:15-16 Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz.
1Chron 1:35-36 Teman, Omar, Zephi, Gatam, Kenaz, Timna, and Amalek.
In the first passage, Gen 36:11, if you’d read on to verse 12, it lists Timna as the concubine with Amelek as another son. In verses 15-16, it lists all the sons, Timna, again was a live-in, not a son! In 1 Chron, the list is again complete, listing all the sons and Timna, the live-in to show the different mothers.
Where’s Jacob buried?
Gen 50:13 Jacob was buried in a cave at Machpelah bought from Ephron
the Hittite.
Acts 7:15-16 He was buried in the sepulchre at Shechem, bought from the
sons of Hamor.
It took a bit of figuring and research on this one! It was Jacob who bought the piece of ground at Shechem from sons of Hamor, not Abraham. He bought it to pitch his tent and build an altar. Joseph, his son, did ask to be buried there and indeed was after the Israelites left Egypt. Jacob was buried where Abraham, Sarah, Rebeccah and Leah were buried, a piece of land Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite in the cave of the field of Machpelah.
In Acts, the author had simply recorded what Stephen had said, not what God had said!
How did Moses get the Law?
Exod 20:1-17 God gave the law directly to Moses (without using an intermediary).
Gal 3:19 The law was ordained through angels by a mediator (an intermediary).
God did come with 10,000 angels there who are “ordained” to abide by them as well. Galations says in verse 20 that God is that mediator. No conflict!!
Where did Aaron die, and where did the Israelites go
then?
Numb 33:41-42 After Aaron's death, the Israelites journeyed from Mt.
Hor, to Zalmonah, to Punon, etc.
Deut 10:6-7 It was from Mosera, to Gudgodah, to Jotbath.
Okay, I followed a map on this one. Both passages were right. The first talks about the camps they made, where they took the time to pitch tents and settle in. If you put Mosera, Gudgodah, Jotbath in where the trail goes, it fits perfectly on a map. For whatever reason, Numbers just didn’t list them. Maybe they didn’t pitch camp there. But anyway, omission is not contradiction.
How did Sisera die?
Judg 4:21 Sisera was sleeping when Jael killed him. [account of
the story]
Judg 5:25-27 Sisera was standing. [song about the story]
How ridiculous! In Chapter 4, She does give him milk to drink. He goes to sleep. She reaches for a peg. Chapter 5, shows that you should know that he goes to sleep! It doesn’t say he was standing when Sisera kills him!! Again, just cause they didn’t put in every little detail in a song, doesn’t show there’s a contradiction!! Does the Ode to Billy Joe have every time Billy stood up or went to sleep or ...........?
Did Saul save Israel from the Philistines as promised
by God?
1Sam 9:15-17 The Lord tells Samuel that Saul has been chosen to lead the
Israelites and will save them from the Philistines.
1Sam 15:35 The Lord is sorry that he has chosen Saul.
1Sam 31:4-7 Saul commits suicide and the Israelites are overrun by the
Philistines.
First off, God did not want to give a king to Israel. See 1 Sam 8:10-22, I Sam 12:15-1, 1 Sam 13:13-14 where the agreement was set between Saul and God. 1 Sam 10:8 Saul was told what to do, but did not listen. However, 14:13, the Philistines fell (many chapters before 31!). Chap 14:20-23, Philistines ran 14:47 Saul assumed the rule. In Chap 15, Saul did not keep his end of the covenant!
Can the Amalekites be utterly destroyed?
1Sam 15:7-8, 20 The Amalekites are utterly destroyed. no one left alive
1Sam 27:8-9 They are utterly destroyed (again?). not a man nor woman left
alive
1Sam 30:1, 17-18 They raid Ziklag and David smites them (again?).
Okay, in 15-the Amalekites utterly destroyed was from Havilen to Shur. In 27, Negev, Jerahmeel, Kanties, Judah, nothing about the Amalekites. The south is the “south district” of Negev. In 30, it was those in Ziklag. Therefore, those mentioned where the towns of the Amalekites, not the entire race. If Russia bombed New York, couldn’t you just hear them say “we sure devastated those Americans, didn’t we?” And it would be the truth!
Did Saul know David or not?
1SA 16:19-23 Saul knew David well before the latter's encounter with
Goliath.
1SA 17:55-58 Saul did not know David at the time of his encounter with
Goliath and had to ask about David's identity.
In chap 17, it was not David’s identity Saul was asking about, he was asking about David’s father! Saul never knew David’s father. Any contact ever made to Jesse, was through messengers. Saul was probably just impressed by David’s ability and wanted to know what blood he had in his veins!?!
How did Goliath die?
1SA 17:50 David killed Goliath with a slingshot.
1SA 17:51 David killed Goliath (again?) with a sword.
It seems David wanted the head of Goliath, ‘cause he was still carrying it in verse 57 (yuch!!!). The word “slew” also means to “destroy” and if cutting off Goliath’s head wasn’t destroying his body, I wouldn’t know what would!
Who killed Goliath?
1SA 17:50 David killed Goliath.
2SA 21:19 Elhanan killed Goliath. (Note: Some translations insert the words
"the brother of" before Elhanan. These are an addition to the
earliest manuscripts in an apparent attempt to rectify this inconsistency.)
The Hebrew Bible and Septuagint and not the brother of Elhanan, but Elahan, son of Jaare, killed Lahmi, the brother of Goliath. Somewhere along the way, “the brother” was either changed or dropped, I saw no examples of this.
But in reading the passages, one will find that what was happening in 2 Samuel were listing of battles and the most renown slayings in each battle of KING David. David was not king when he slew and beheaded Goliath, so this could not have been the Goliath we know. So apparently, it was either another Goliath, or more than likely, the brother of the Goliath we all know.
How did Saul actually die?
1Sam 31:4-6 Saul killed himself by falling on his sword.
2Sam 2:2-10 Saul, at his own request, was slain by an Amalekite.
1Chron 10:13-14 Saul was slain by God.
1 Sam is the accurate account. In 2 Sam, an Amalekite is telling the story (his own version) to David. He lied, as is seen at the end of the chapter when David asked the whimpering Amalekite, “how could YOU have ever gotten the courage to kill the king?” 1 Chron is almost word for word until the 13th verse, where apparently the scribe decided to “decipher” the reasoning behind Saul committing suicide.
How many were there?
2Sam 24:9 The census count was: Israel 800,000 and Judah 500,000.
1Chron 21:5 The census count was: Israel 1,100,000 and Judah 470,000.
Though there are several numeric errors in the Bible, I had to touch this one. For this case, in 2 Chro, it shows that 288,000 men are always coming and going to the field for military duty. By rounding off, the Israelite count is true. Same for Judah 24,000 of Judeans would hit the mark. The first writer was apparently a Jew and remembered his military brethren whereas the other writer was from a different tribe and did the same.
David’s sins?
2Sam 24:10-17 David sinned in taking the census.
1Kings 15:5 David's only sin (ever) was in regard to Uriah the Hittite.
The 2nd is the case of keeping God’s commandments. In taking the census, David did not transgress the commandments, but did do something out of extreme pride, which is what probably made God unhappy.
Did Asa remove the high places?
1KI 15:14 Asa did not remove the high places.
2CH 14:2-3 He did remove them.
In 2 Chron, Asa removed them from Judah, but apparently not any where else. Therefore he did not remove ALL of them, but did remove ALL of them in Judah as the second instance shows.
Was Ahaz conquered?
2Kings 16:5 The King of Syria and the son of the King of Israel did
not conquer Ahaz.
2Chron 28:5-6 They did conquer Ahaz.
I don’t see a conflict here either. 2 Kings says they besieged, but didn’t overcome him. 2 Chron says same thing with more detail. They took prisoners, but (vs 14) had to leave them. So, they waylaid of lot of hurt to him, but they didn’t wipe him off the face of the earth.
Should we be happy if one sees another fall?
Psalms 58:10-11 The righteous shall rejoice when he sees vengeance.
Prov 24:16-18 Do not rejoice when your enemy falls or stumbles.
Ps 58:9 says they will be taken away and vs 10 says he (the righteous) will wash his feet in the blood. This is definitely speaking of the end times. Rev 6:10 have the martyred asking when is vengeance coming and God says in a little while. The righteous will indeed be able to rejoice at the end of time for the justice/judgment delivered on that final day. However, as said in Proverbs, we shouldn’t be happy about someone else’s problems in the meantime!
Was Jeremiah true to Zedekiah?
Jere 34:4-5 Zedekiah was to die in peace.
Jere 52:10-11 Instead, Zedekiah’s sons are slain before his eyes, his eyes
are then put out, he is bound in fetters, taken to Babylon and left in
prison to die.
Chap 34 says Neb will burn the city. Zedekiah will not escape and will see Neb himself. Yet Zedekiah won’t die by the sword, and people will honor him in his death like they did his fathers. Jeremiah 38: 17-18 Jeremiah told Zedekiah he needed to surrender to the officers of Babylon, then his family would live, but if he didn’t his family would indeed die. But Zedekiah fled when Babylon attacked, leaving others behind to continue fighting. By doing this, he himself killed his family! In chap 52, Zedekiah’s sons were killed in front of him and he was thrown in jail. He did not die by the sword as God had promised. The word Shalom in 34:5, means safety. He may not have been happy, but he was safe! I almost imagine, Zedekiah probably wished he had died by the sword.
Murder or not?
Exod 20:13 Thou shalt not kill
Exod 32:27 Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every man his sword by
his side... and slay every man his brother...
Gen 4:5-6 At the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of
man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed.
Gen 4:15 And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should
kill him.
You are to respect each other’s life, unless God has approved. Cain murdered before God gave Moses this law. God is the one who gives the punishment. The wicked will die however, God deems his death, through Him only after death, or before, through man as God deems it to be.
David outsmarts angels?
1CH 21:29-30, 22:1, 23:25-26 The Davidians won that struggle over the
earthly residence of God. David could not enter the tabernacle in the high
place to inquire of the Lord because one of the Lord's sword-bearing angels
was refusing to allow David to enter. So David decided that if he could
not inquired of the Lord in the high place, what the heck, why not just
move the Lord to where he was? And thus Jerusalem, that renowned center
of peace and brotherly love, became the "Holy City of God."
In the first passage, David was afraid of the angel. The angel was not at the temple, but at the threshing floor of Araimsh. David actually brought the temple to where the angel was, not away from him!!! Read it for yourself.
How old was Jehoiachin?
2Chron 36:9 - "How old was Jehoiachin when he began his rule?"-
he was "8" and ruled for 3 months and 10 days then "lost
favor with God" and was replaced, by a man who ruled for 11 years.
2Kings 24:8 this is the same story only it says he was "18!"
Some will say he started at 8 and "reruled" at 18, but remember
he was replaced by a man who ruled for 11 years (in 2 Chronicles 36:9)
so he would have been at least 19
This is another true translation error.
