KITCHEN EXPERIMENTS -- MEASURING THE ANGLE

Kitchenware for the experiments

I conducted four experiments with different methods to measure the angle of repose, all using kitchenware. These included a funnel, a plastic food container, a salt container with a hinged lid, and a hollow tin can. At the end of the experiments, I compared the methods to look at their merits and demerits. First, I had to make a clinometer for measuring the angles.

Preparation -- Home-made Clinometer

A clinometer is an instrument for measuring the angle of a slope. I followed these steps to make a clinometer using a protractor:
1. Photocopy a protractor and enlarge it
2. Re-arrange the readings to suit the purpose of measuring slopes
3. Laminate the sheet
4. Stick it onto cardboard
5. Tie weight on one end of a string
6. Pierce hole at the origin of the laminated protractor
7. Insert other end of the string through the hole from front to back
8. Fix end of string to the back with sticky tape
9. A clinometer is ready to use
