I started my survey on Burwood Road near Westfield Shopping Centre. After recording the characteristics of fifty shops, I found that only 6 of them displayed Chinese. This was very surprising, as it did not reflect the ethnic composition in the population of the suburb. However, once I had walked past the railway station along the same road, the streetscape changed dramatically. Then I realised that the Chinese shops were not evenly distributed along Burwood Road, but were concentrated on the stretch south of the railway station. I decided to conduct a second survey to compare with the one I had previously done. There are 46 % of the shops surveyed displayed Chinese languages with another 8 % displaying Korean. This contrasts with the result along the northern part of the road that had only 12 % with Chinese and 4 % with other ethnic languages. |
