Original Dan Winter's House http://orangenet.org/winter/ *** My great-grandfather John Wesley Winters had always maintained that our Irish Winters family was directly descended from that of Daniel Winter who owned this cottage in 1795. John had an old postcard he had brought back with him in 1916 when he was in the Canadian Army. While on leave in England he went to Ireland and visited this historic site. Daniel's family had settled in Ireland around 1600 and had farmed the land surrounding the cottage. The "Diamond", where this cottage is located is a hamlet near the townland of Grange Lower, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is a very well known historical site in Ireland and to this day is in the care and ownership of the Winter Family. My grandmother, Iola Prout Winters wrote an Orange Lodge in Ireland in 1989 to see if we could get any confirmation of our ties to this family. They kindly put us in touch with Hilda Winter who's son is the current owner of this historical cottage. While I have yet to get documented proof that our line does in fact connect with them she has been very supportive of our efforts to find our way home to Ireland. It is my sincere hope that in time I will be able to find the road to Armagh. I have been able to prove that my John the Elder was born in Armagh, Ireland but am still on the hunt as to the exact location.. Please visit Dan Winter's Cottage on-line and enjoy the very informative site. If your family Winter(s) background is Irish Protesant with Orange Lodge ties as I do then perhaps YOU are a branch of their historical family tree? *** |
