Ivan John Wesley Winters Born - June 15, 1908 Strathclair, Manitoba Died - April 24, 1960 Winnipeg, Manitoba Married January 15, 1938 - Winnipeg, Manitoba to: Alice Elizabeth Brown Born - April 5, 1910 England Died - December 16, 1977 Winnipeg, Manitoba *** Ivan was born in Strathclair, Manitoba to Annie and John Winters. Apparently, when he was born, the midwife in attendance (Ivania) forgot to register his birth and by the time she went to do so had forgotten the exact date! Somehow, her name was put on the registration as well so he was named Ivan John Wesley Winters - born June 15, 1908, legally - but secretly Ivan was never really sure what his exact date of birth was! He was brought up in Poplar Point, Manitoba and recieved most of his education there. He helped on the farm and attended the Setter Church with his family. After his mother passed away, he moved to Winnipeg and found employment with the Canadian National Railway. Ivan married Alice Brown in 1938 and the following year they started their family. When the Second World War broke out, Ivan answered Canada's call to arms and joined the Royal Canadian Airforce. He was refused the chance to go overseas due to a hearing defect. |

When the war ended, Ivan and Alice bought a small house in Elmwood, Manitoba and had three more children. They became very involved in their community and Grey Street United Church of which Ivan served on the Board of Stewards. He also coached baseball, hockey and was President of both the Chalmers and East End Community Clubs. Ivan and Alice were active members of the Loyal Orange Lodge and Ivan belonged to the RCAF and Valor Road Legion. Alice was employed by the T. Eaton Company of Winnipeg and later became a homemaker. She enjoyed her children, crafts, ceramics and did beautiful needlework. Ivan was a dedicated and loving father, husband and brother and was greatly missed upon his early death in 1960. The Elmwood Community Club sponsored a trophy for "Best Sportsmanship" as a tribute to this man who had given so much of himself to others. It is still given out today in Ivan's memory. There are many living descendants of Ivan and Alice and both would have been proud to see how well their family thrives and continues to grow today. *** |
