I have been able to find documentation on the following children of John and Elizabeth Winters: Nicholas, James Longwell, Silas, John, Catharine (married Francis Grimmeson), Margaret (married John Wannamaker, Rachel and Elizabeth (married Captain Thomas Sacret). As Nicholas was born about 1827 and John and Betsy married in 1822 it is likely that there were more children from this marriage not yet identified. Census records, baptismal, marriage, death registrations and obituaries of family members tracked them through Ontario starting in Clarke Township, Durham County Ontario (pre 1840) to Barrie and then to Marmora Township, Hastings County (about 1850 - 1870). The 1860 Heads of Household Index list John the elder sharing concession 9, lot 20 with his son Silas. John Winters junior and family were living on concession 9, lot 19. The 1864 and 1869 Heads of Household index list the men still living on the same lots though Silas had moved to Port Hope, Ontario with his family. What became of John and Elizabeth after 1860 remained a mystery until June 28, 2005 when I recieved the following obituary: |
COUNTY INTELLIGENCE ______________________ (From our own Correspondence and Contemporaries) LAKEFIELD Death's Doings ---- Monday last saw the expiring breath of a gentleman who came to this country with the regulars of 1812. John Winters was born in 1785, so that he would be 93 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in the township of Monaghan, Ireland. After leaving the regular army he settled in the Township of Clarke in Durham County. He resided there for five or six years when he removed to Marmora, Hastings County, where he resided till the death of his wife some eight years ago. Since then he has lived in Lakefield at the residence of his son-in-law, Captain Sacret. He served in the rebellion of 1836-37, on the loyalist side. He leaves a large circle of relatives to mourn his loss. |

In accordance with the new obituary information regarding John Winters, Elizabeth apparently died around this time and he left Marmora. *** |

__________________________________________________________ Rachel Winters Born about 1843 Ontario, Canada The only concrete evidence I have of Rachel is her being recorded in the 1861 census records]of Marmora Township, Hastings County, Ontario. It recorded her as being an "idiot" which could have meant many things in those days. It could have meant she was deaf or blind or mentally handicapped. I am actively trying to find out more information about Rachel. |
