John and (Eliza) Sarah Downard Winters John Born about 1830 Ontario, Canada Died 1869 - 1871 Married December 30, 1846 - St. Thomas Anglican Church - Belleville, Ontario to: Eliza Sarah Downard Born July 17 - 1828 Ireland Died May 18, 1904 Orillia, Ontario |
*** Recorded in the 1861 Canadian Census records for Marmora Township, Hastings County, Ontario John and Sarah were living "right next door" to his parents John and Elizabeth Winters. A heads of household index records John the younger as living on concession 9, lot 19 in 1860, '64 and '69. A search of actual land transaction records turned up only those of John and Elizabeth so it is likely that John the younger was a tenant. His occupation in the 1861 census was described as a "yeoman". Early definition of this phrase was a land owner or someone who works the land. John and Sarah had the following children namely: Nicholas; Mary Ann; Elizabeth; Sarah; Silas; John Wesley and William. Sometime after the taking of the 1869 heads of household list John died. The obituary of his son Silas stated that his father died of "hardship and exposure during a Fenian raid" but I have been unable to confirm this. What is fact is that Sarah split her children up to ensure their survival as the family was left destitute. In 1871 I was only able to find John Wesley and Willian living in Marmora with their foster parents. Some of the girls were likely married. Sarah remarried on May 6, 1872 in Belleville to William White. He was a shoemaker by trade and was born in England. Sarah ended her days in Orillia, Ontario where she was laid to rest in the Orillia Cemetery. *** |
Forced to separate her children after the death of her husband, John Winters, Sarah re-married William White. According to census records they lived most of their lives in Port Hope. In the 1901 Ontario census record I found Sarah in Orillia as a lodger in a house. After her death, her son Silas had his deceased daughterOlive Annetta moved to lay beside her grandmother, Sarah. Olive had passed away in 1895. His family taken care of Silas and his wife Annabell moved west to join their two remaining children. |
Several of these funeral announcements were found in the bible of my grt-gpa John Winters. These contributed greatly in giving me the ability to join his family together again. |
