Barker. *** This was the funeral announcement of the second wife of Silas Winters, Ellen Pomeroy. *** ++++++++++++++++++ SUDDEN DEATH The sudden death of Mr. Henry Pethick -better known as Little Harry- on Monday evening, was a great shock to the townspeople, few of whom knew of his illness. His death came suddenly and was unexpected even by his friends, after a short illness from inflamation of the lungs, having taken to his bed on Friday. Henry Pethick was born in the Township of Cavan, forty-two years ago. He came to Orillia in March, 1890, and soon made his Candy Palace one of the institutions of the town. He was a master of the art of candy-making and his confections were always in demand, while his bright, cheerful manner and straightforward honesty added to his popularity and to his patronage. Previous to his coming to Orillia, he had been in business in Midland and in Sault Ste. Marie. He leaves a wife and two children - a son and a daughter - to mourn his untimely end. The funeral on Wednesday was attended by the Sons of England, the Orangemen and the True Blues, of which Societies the deceased was a member, and also by a large number of prominent citizens. The Rev. Canon Greene conducted the religious service and the inpressive burial service of the Sons of England was read by the President and Chaplain of Lodge Rose of Couchiching, Mr. E. W. Couldridge and Mr. H. C. Channen. The pallbearers were Messrs. C. Clarke, H. Andrews, W. Brandon, H.C. Channen, W. Moore and W. Wilson. Mr. Levi Pethick came from Seaforth to attend his brother's funeral. - Orillia Packet *** A copy of Henry's funeral announcement was found in the bible of John Wesley Winters. *** |

Eva Jane Winters (daughter of Silas and Elizabeth) married Edward B. Weart. Eva died in Orillia on June 15, 1889 at the age of 24. Several funeral announcements were found in the Bible of my great grandfather John Wesley Winters when he passed away in the 1930's. In the late 1980's my grandmother and I were planning a family reunion in Winnipeg, Manitoba and copies of those funeral announcements were sent to us by my cousin, David Winters who has the Bible. Through many, many hours of census research and hand research my grandmother and I started piecing this Winters family together. When she passed away in 2000 my husband bought me a computer and I have carried on making family connections. Today, January 29, 2009 I received an e-mail from Eva's daughter Mable's great-grandson Andrew .... and so the branches of our Irish Canadian Winters Family Tree continue coming together! |
