*** William was not recorded in the 1861 Census Records of Marmora as he was the last of John and Sarah's children to be born - after the census had been taken.  When his father passed away, William was fostered out to the family of George Wiggins.  In both the 1871 and 1881 Census records of Marmora Township he is recorded as living with this family.  It is known that at some point he joined his elder brothers, Nicholas and Silas in Michigan where they worked in the painting and lumber industries.

It was while there that he learned how to be a blacksmith and eventually opened his own own very successful blacksmith shop in Marquette, Michigan.  William was known to be one of the best blacksmiths in the Marquette area.  After his untimely death, Anna bought and operated a millinery shop to support her family.  All of their children were born at the family home - 603 Fourth Street in Marquette.   There are many living members of this branch of our Winters Family Tree.***
My grandmother and I knew of a connection to this Winters family in Marquette because of a family photo that had been found belonging to my great-grandfather, John Wesley, Williams brother.  We originally tried to make contact with them by sending letters of greeting when webegan compiling information for this family tree in 1989 with no luck.  My husband bought me a computer after my grandmother passed away in 2000.  As I learned my way around the web I began leaving messages every place I could regarding this connection.

February 9, 2003 was a banner day!  I recieved an e-mail from the Ancestry.Com Message Board that a reply had been posted in regards to my search for this branch of our family tree.  I made contact with William Winters grandson via that message. Jack is the author of these pages and it is my deepest hope that we will someday have a reunion of our branches of our Irish Winters.

From the memories of Arthur Winters:
"My father was a blacksmith.  He had his own shop and was considerred to be an unusually competent horseshoer having the ability to make shoes to correct various malfunctions of horse gaits and discomforts.  He was also a carriage  maker and had a very busy shop.  The shoemaking of horses of various temperments always fascinated me and I spent many afternoons after school at the shop as a blacksmith apprentice."
