Gilles Leblanc |
Gilles Leblanc was one of the Dubois Gang's less known members, even though he was extremely active in Montreal during the 1970s. As a loyal soldier for the gang's leader, Claude Dubois, Leblanc was primarily involved in strong-arming, extortion, and armed robbery. When Richard Désormiers began causing trouble in a club run by the Dubois Gang, Claude Dubois sent Leblanc and Claude Lesage to teach him a lesson. The two were supposed to give Désormiers a beating but, once on the scene, changed their minds. They knew that assaulting the brother-in-law of Frank Cotroni was like playing with fire. Leblanc and Lesage were later reprimanded by Dubois for not following his orders. |
Leblanc, along with Dubois soldiers Yvon Belzil, Réal Lévesque, and Claude Dubeau, provided security when Claude Dubois met with Frank Cotroni numerous times to discuss the Désormiers problem. When no resolution could be reached, Dubois decided to take care of business. He gave the mission of whacking the troublesome Désormiers to Leblanc and Claude Lesage. The two enforcers were supposed to murder him and make his body disappear. When Leblanc and Lesage couldn't fulfill the task a frustrated Dubois gave the contract to trusted aides Yvon Belzil and Claude Dubeau. Désormiers was murdered in the Mon Pays bar on July 22, 1973. In the autumn of 1975, Jacques Lemieux and Gérald Mayer opened the Honest John Theatrical Agency near the Agence Calcé, a booking agency for exotic dansers that was under the protection of Claude Dubois. Dubois, who collected $250 a week from the Agence Calcé, did not like the extra competition. One evening, when Lemieux and Mayer and their secretary Denise Adam were dining at the Giusitini steak house in Saint-Léonard, Leblance and several Dubois Gang members charged into the restaurant and attacked the group. Lemieux and Mayer were severely beaten and, before exiting, Leblanc fired two shots at Denise Adam, a former employee of Agence Calcé. Leblanc, along with Dubois soldier Michel Bernard, was shot to death in the l'Index nightclub on March 12, 1976. The gang was furious and sought blood. Normand Perras, who they suspected was one of killers, was later murdered in a tavern on Ontario street. |
