Michel Bernard |
Michel Bernard, born around 1953, was probably one of the youngest members of the Dubois Gang. He became associated with the group in his late teens and, according to documents of the Quebec Police's inquiry into organized crime, worked for Claude Dubois in extortion, shylocking, and drug rackets. Between October 1973 and May 1975, authorities contend, Bernard received $125 a week from a job at the Taverne Montreal bar, although he didn't do any work there. Several employees reportedly even had to Bernard $30 a week for a "work permit". When Bernard was fired, a series of fights and robberies began taking place at the bar, and the establishment was eventually sold. |
Bernard was among the Dubois Gang henchmen who participated in the "take over" of the Iroquois Hotel in Old Montreal. On the morning of May 5, 1975, Jacques Ouimet called a reunion of all his employees in a room at the hotel. Allegedly awaiting them inside were Adrien Dubois, Jean-Paul Dubois, Michel Bernard, Donald and Carl Lavoie, Alain Charron, Denis Barette, Roger Brissette, and several others. The employees were reportedly told that they were fired and to never step foot in Old Montreal again. Donald Lavoie, armed with a baseball bat, and another soldier then proceeded to threaten, hit, and spit on the employees. Their jobs were then given to associates of Adrien Dubois, authorities claim. Bernard was among several gang members who experienced financial trouble and borrowed cash off of Claude Dubois, documents of the Quebec Police's inquiry into organized crime revealed. In September 1975, he approached Dubois for $1,700, so he could have his car fixed. On March 12, 1976, Bernard and Gilles Leblanc, another reputed Dubois Gang member, were at the l'Index nightclub, near Old Montreal. A suspect walked up to Bernard, then 23 years old, and shot him in the back. Leblanc took out a knife to attack the killer, but was shot in the face, heart, and left shoulder. The killer and an accomplice then fled the club, escaping the scene in a taxi. |
