Remote Car Starter Installation This section will cover how to install a remote car starter (from DesignTech International). The starter is also equipped with keyless entry and alarm features. It will only work on cars with automatic transmissions. AVOID THE LARGE YELLOW WIRES AND HARNESSES. THEY ARE FOR THE AIRBAG AND SHOULD NOT BE TOUCHED. THEY ARE GENERALLY WELL MARKED AND VISIBLE. First, remove the kick panel, metal plate and air duct from the drivers side foot well. There is one snap screw holding the duct in place in the top left corner of it. Find the wires coming off the steering column. They have a white clip holding them together and are held up by a black plastic clip. Follow the wiring guide to find what wires you need for the ignition wires. Next, install the hood pin switch. This will shut off the car and turn on the alarm if someone opens your hood when its running. Drill a hole anywhere you want and install the switch. I chose this location because it is close to the hole in the firewall we will be using. There is a rubber grommet right next to the diagnostic plug that leads to the wheel well. It may be necessary to take some screws out of the thin black plastic on the inside of wheel well to snake the wires from the car to the engine bay. The grommet on the inside of the car is right above the fuses by the drivers feet. You will want to run the power, tach, and hood pin switch wires through the firewall. Next, install the brake shut-off wire. This is shut off the car when the brake is pressed. Located directly above the brake is a white plug with 5 wires coming out of it. The wire you want is green/white. You may want to unplug each plug in this section before splicing the wires in to make sure you have the right wire. For example, turn the headlights on and unplug it to make sure you are in the right place. To install the parking light wire, locate the fuses in the drivers side foot well. You're looking for the green wire with silver dots The horn wire is close to where the ignition wires are located. It is solid green. The 5th generation Celica's door locks are Positive Trigger. That is, they send a 12 volt signal when the button is pressed. For comparison, Negative Trigger locks have a constant 12 volt signal, except when the button is pressed, then it is 0 volts. The door 2 wires you are looking for can be found in the drivers kick panel coming from the grommet on the drivers door. What you are looking at in the picture below is the 2 blue wires you need coming out of the blue plug. On the far right side of the plug are 3 wires. Starting from the top right, there is: solid blue - which is your door lock, blue with black - which is your door unlock, and the bottom right is white with black that does something else. You don't need the white/Black one. Splice into the appropriate wire and you're done.
You can mount the unit anywhere you can find space. I reattached my duct and zip-tied it to that, to the left of the steering column. You can really put it anywhere you want. As for the antenna... The company recommends you put it behind the rear view mirror. I didn't want this big black antenna hanging down in my way so I ran the wire under the scuff plate and put it in the rear window. I propped it up so it its half behind the trim plastic. You don't even have to tape it there, which it nice if you have tinted windows. |
