His biography written by my father, Parker LaBach: TACITUS BURGIN, the son of John and Mary (Howard) Burgin was born on the family farm in Madison County near Otter Creek, near Richmond, Kentucky on Feb. 7, 1829. He married Mary Helen Hinds, daughter of Samuel and Eleanor (Dinwiddie) Hinds, on Sept. 17, 1851 at Camargo near Mt. Sterling in Montgomery County, KY. [Note: Mary Helen Hinds' parents died when she was very young and she lived with her mother's sister's family, the Kirkpatricks.] Tacitus and Mary Burgin lived on a farm on Otter Creek near "station of Shearer" for a few years. Three of their seven children, Perry, Bettie and John, were born there. Tacitus' father, John Burgin, died in 1856. On May 9, 1856 Calvin Burgin and Rowan his wife, Tacitus Burgin and Mary his wife, Thos. G. Parish and Louisa his wife sold their rights in the land of John Burgin to Clifton and Esom Burgin. All parties were heirs of John Burgin. The deed is registered in Madison Co. Crt., Deed Bk. 9, p. 499. There is a detailed description of the land in the deed. Sometime after that and before the birth of their next child in 1859 they moved to Fayette County one mile east of Athens. Their house still stands although in somewhat dilapidated condition since it has not been lived in for many years. Tacitus described himself as being a farmer, a democrat politically, and a member of the Christian Church in Athens. Tacitus Burgin died at the age of 86 at the home of his son, Dr. Perry Burgin, at McIntosh, Florida, March 9, 1915. Both Tacitus and Mary Burgin are buried in the Lexington Cemetery, as is Mary's brother Tilford Dinwiddie Hinds (Uncle Tip).

Dennis became the father of Charles Burgin ca 1768. Dennis became the father of Thomas Burgin ca 1770. Dennis Burgin first appears in Madison County Court records in February, 1787. According to family tradition, he took part in the abortive attempt to settle Kentucky in 1773 led by William Russell and Daniel Boone. It is also claimed he was one of the roadcutters who cleared a path to Boonesborough in 1775 and he was in the fort at Boonesborough. No proof of these family traditions seems to exist at this time. Dennis served for a year in the North Carolina Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. He was buried at the Providence Methodist Church in Madison County. The Church was moved and the graveyard may no longer exist.
