CHRISTIAN LANDON BIO |
|||||||||
Christian Landon was born and raised in the deserts of California. At age 12, in 1983, snippets of news of the freaks from the Blitz in London started to seep into the American press and media, and Christian became fascinated with dressing up with a small band of his friends. Age 13 they started hitching lifts down to L.A where they hung out around the clubs such as Plastic Passion, Scream and Peanuts, where no one would have guessed the boy with long black and magenta hair, with a full face of makeup and no eyebrows, wearing a tutu, a straightjacket and thigh-boots, looking like a by-product of Belle & Khan and an alien dominatrix, was only 13 years old.
Christian began cutting all the freaks hair, since his own was so extreme, and with the encouragement of his grandfather went to hair school. He followed this by apprenticing with several hair artists and wig makers in San Francisco. Living between L.A and San Francisco, Christian's work became respected since he was doing the hair and wigs for many of the underground and avant-garde performers and musicians. He worked with people ranging from the B52s to doing editorial work for iD magazine. His wigs also were showcased at the Metropolitan Museum of Art alongside the works of Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, and other artists that produced wearable art. The aesthetic of his work is heavily influenced, first and foremost by Steve Strange, Martin Degville, David and Angie Bowie, Michelangelo, Adam Ant, Pete and Lynne Burns, David Cabaret and Tasty Tim. Cultural references include North and South Native Americans, courtiers of the Baroque/Rococo, the Dandies and the Macaronis, the opium smoking bohemians of Paris in the 1920s, and last but not least, the single greatest influence in fashion and cultural history, HRH Queen Elizabeth I. In 2006 Christian finally came to London for the premier of a film he had worked on, and decided immediately that he could not leave. The first person he met in London by chance was Tasty Tim and this seemed to be a sign that he metaphorically had landed in his home-world. Since being based in London, Christian has been doing experimental editorial work, creating looks for English socialites and London's club personalities for shows ranging from small cabaret events to large spectacles such as Torture Garden.
