THE PLAYGROUND STEVE STRANGE / RUSTY EGAN

It was the opening night of Steve Strange and Rusty Egan's new club, The Playground,  based - for the moment - at The Lyceum in The Strand.  The hip reputation of the entreprenurial duo was enough to attract London's image-conscious in their droves.  / Honey / March 1985 London got a much-needed new Saturday night-club venue this week when Steve Strange and Rusty Egan opened The Playground at The Lyceum in the Strand. Much of the world was there - if only out of curiosity - all dressed up and eady to play along with a bewigged steve in white furn fur coat and white Andy Pandy playsuit Revealed in all their glory under ( by an obliging Paul Rutherford from Frankie Goes To Hollywood who unbid the buttons at the back of his playsuit ) was a red t- Shirit and Calvin Klein Y-fronts .... It was a night for real fashion victims with fantasy and extravagance in body-adornment - especially make-up - reaching new heights of exotica.  Baby dolls were a popular choice of girl singers and rent boys,  worn with thigh-high black patent boots a Tesco carrier bag for holding the essentials. Among the fashion people there was Stephen Jones accompanied by his Maid-Marion-in-blue assistant Sybille;  a vaguely Byronic Tom Gilbey;  the everychic Monica Chong in black velvet and diamante,  style-setter and Mud Club owner Philip Sallon in Hawaiian flower garlands,  and designer Dean Bright in embroidered velvet.
