Scene 23 are the new American Popstars, chosen through the Popstars 2 series. Their album is quite different to that of other Popstars groups, in that it features not only music by the new band, but also music used in the series, and things like that. It's like the album of the show, rather than of the band. It's an interesting idea, I guess! Despite this, Scene 23 have a number of their own songs, some of which are quite good. The Band There were originally six members of the band, but one member, Moi, was asked to leave because he told his friends about the final band line-up before anyone was supposed to know. It was pretty harsh that they kicked him out, I think, but I suppose the show has rules just like anything else. Well, there are three girls and two guys in the band, and their names are Laurie, Josh, Monika, Donavan, and Dorothy. The Music The makers of the band enlisted the help of a lot of talented songwriters to write Scene 23's songs, but you can't always tell by listening to the songs! While some of the songs are really good, others are just ordinary and not terribly exciting. You get tired of them quickly! The first single(I think, anyway!) 'He said, she said' is a good song. Mixed boy & girl groups often have problems with how to make their songs, I think. This usually results in songs like those by S Club 7 & Steps, where you can see the guys but not hear them! It's just a fact that male & female voices don't blend as well as all male/all female voices, and also there's the problem of the subject of a song… It has to make sense with both guys & girls singing it together! I think Scene 23 solved the problem, finally! 'He said, she said' is like a conversation between the guys & girls, and it really works out well! The same could be said for 'Another night', which has the same format, but is not quite so good. 'What she got' is only sung by the girls, I think, for obvious reasons. It sounds cool, but is not really my favourite type of song. 'Respect me' is similar, in that it sounds cool but it's not really the best song I've heard. It's a general sort of song that anyone could sing, so I can see why they chose it! 'I really don't think so' is just a really nice song. Maybe the best by Scene 23. The original version was sung by K-otic! 'The Greatest' is quite a nice song too, and I think it has the same conversation format as some of the other songs. I don't particularly like 'All this love', but I've heard a lot worse songs, so it's not that bad! Links
