Sugar Jones are another girl group, and the Canadian Popstars. In some ways, I think they have a distinctive look and sound compared to other Popstars groups. They seem a bit more 'real'. They've released a couple of songs that aren't too bad, but as far as I know, they haven't released anything overseas yet.
The Band
The band is made up of five girls, like usual: Mirella, Sahara, Maiko, Julie & Andrea. I don't know a lot about the band, because like most official websites, their site is particularly bad. It has very little information, no proper photos, and not much else. Sugar Jones is a bit of a weird band name, and apparently the girls got it from a street called Sugar Street, and replaced 'street' with 'jones' to make it sound more cool. It doesn't sound bad, but I think they could have tried a bit harder, personally. The girls all look very different, and that makes the group look interesting. As I mentioned before, there is something essentially Canadian about them. Light, acoustic sort of pop-rock seems to be very popular in Canada, and their sound and image, while suiting a pop band, reflect this. The girls wear normal clothes and don't appear half-naked like the Popstars of other countries (eg Eden's Crush, Bardot). They are not all traditionally pretty, but as mentioned earlier, they appear to be more 'real'. And for this reason, I quite like them. Maiko has recently left the band to tour with her husband, who is apparently a singer, although I've never heard of him!
The Music
Their music isn't too bad. The first single by Sugar Jones is called 'Days like that'. It's a pretty cool song, and fairly catchy. It was originally sung by a British girl-group called Fierce, so make sure you get the right version if you download the song! I didn't know that the other version was actually sung by a different band until recently! This is a pop song, but sounds a bit more like real music, like I keep saying! The girls have a second single too, but it's not really too good. 'How much longer' has the potential to be pretty good, but somehow turns out to be kind of average. It's just too predictable, I think. And it doesn't really seem to follow any particular style, and ends up just being a fairly mainstream, unexciting sort of song. I hope to hear more from Sugar Jones soon!
