| Real Name: Mikhail Rasputin Powers: Mikhail Rasputin is a mutant with various superhuman powers, including the ability to rearrange the molecular structure of matter at will and the ability to teleport himself and others or things. History: Mikhail Rasputin, the elder brother of the X-Man Colossus, was a Soviet cosmonaut who was believed to have perished in outer space. In actuality, Mikhail was transported to an alternate dimension known as the Void; he lived there for nearly a decade, and the experience left him mentally unhinged. While investigating a gravimetric disturbance in the Sakhalin Islands off the coast of Siberia, the X-Men encountered a vortex, which pulled them into the dimension where Mikhail lived. The X-Men rescued him and brought him to their headquarters, Charles Xavier's mansion. It was there that Mikhail met Callisto, former leader of the underground community of mutants called the Morlocks. Believing himself to be in love with her, Mikhail followed Callisto to the Morlocks' subterranean tunnels. There he insanely sought to bring peace to himself and the Morlocks by killing both them and himself. Mikhail employed his mutant powers to flood the Morlock tunnels, apparently killing himself and all the Morlocks with him. Later, however, Mikhail reappeared, captured Storm, and transported her to an other-dimensional realm, which he called "the Hill." There time passed more quickly than it did on Earth: Mikhail was now decades older and he was training the offspring of the Morlocks, known as Gene Nation, into an army. Storm and Cable defeated both Mikhail and Gene Nation, but they did not learn that Mikhail had been acting under the direction of the Black Beast, the sinister scientist from the alternate Earth of "the Age of apocalypse." Subsequently, Mikhail Rasputin traveled into the past in an attempt to prevent his sister, Illyana, from becoming infected by the Legacy Virus, the lethal disease that would claim her life. At the point in the past to which he journeyed, Illyana had become a teenager, was a member of the New Mutants, a team of adolescent mutants, and was known as Magik. When she died she had regressed in age to that of a small child. Mikhail infected her with the Legacy Virus, believing that the mystical abilities she possessed as Magik would enable her to develop an immunity to it. But Mikhail was wrong, and hence it is he who is responsible for causing Illyana's death. Upon being confronted with this fact by the New Mutants, the guilt-stricken Mikhail teleported himself away. His present whereabouts and activities are unknown. |
