chores as possible.  Good friends with both Rand al’Thor and Perrin Aybara, it was most often Mat’s quick thinking that landed the three of them in trouble.

Mat, like his two friends, was forced to leave the seclusion of the small village he grew up in when Trollocs attacked on Winternight.  Their path led to the dead city of Shadar Logoth, from which Mat removed a dagger adorned with a large ruby.  The evil of Shadar Logoth seeped into Mat through the dagger, making him paranoid and extremely suspicious of others.  Even after intensive Aes Sedai Healing, Mat remains linked to the dagger.  Though cured of the paranoia and suspicion, he still would die if it were removed from his possession for an extended period of time.

The dagger is not the only item that Mat is linked to.  For it was Mat Cauthon who sounded the Horn of Valere .  As long as Mat lives, the Horn will be as any other horn to another.  Only the Hornsounder is able to call the dead heroes from the Ages back from the grave.

For one who dislikes the One Power , and more or less anything to do with it, Mat has had a great deal of experience with items of the Power.  He has traversed through two ter’angreal , red doorways which lead to other dimensions.  This is how Mat gained the ancient memories of soldiers throughout the Ages.  He can speak the Old Tongue, fluently.  His personal weapon is a quarterstaff, topped with an odd black spear; this type of weapon has not been used in many years, and his was wrought with the Power.  He also has in his possession a foxhead medallion which prevents the One Power from touching him.

Mat’s newfound and extensive military knowledge has led to him to the command of a unit known as the Band of the Red Hand .  The Band certainly owes some of its success to Mat’s impossibly good luck.  His luck runs strongest when things are totally random, such as dice.  Perhaps this luck is the product of Mat being ta’veren, though it might be due to something else.

Sometimes Mat chafes at the duties he must perform in Rand’s service, but he does recognize his importance in the battle against the Shadow.  Should Mat Cauthon fall in the course of his duties, the forces of the Light would have a difficult time overcoming his loss.
