Amazing what a change of scenery can do to a person's success. "Big Daddy
Cool" Diesel, a WWF "Triple Crown" winner, got his start in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) after
being discovered by Dusty Rhodes. Nash had played basketball at the University of Tennessee, and played pro in
Europe, but a knee injury ended his career. So he brought to the WCW training facility (aka the Power Plant), and
in 1990 started working for the National Wrestling Alliance (soon to become WCW). Nash started out as the bodyguard
of Woman, known as Nitron. Later on he was one-half of the team, the Master Blasters. The team was basically a
rip-off of the Legion of Doom, with their massive physiques and mohawks. Nash (known as Steel) teamed with Blade
(Al Greene) and enjoyed success at the beginning, but soon became cannon fodder for more accomplished teams such
as the LOD, Doom, and the Steiner Brothers. The team was eventually dropped.
Kevin Nash returned to WCW with one of the worst gimmicks in wrestling history.
Dusty Rhodes, who was the head booker in WCW at the time, came up with the idea. Rhodes wanted to exploit the vast
MGM movie library owned by WCW's parent company, Turner, Inc. The first (and thankfully, last) experiment was from
the movie "The Wizard from Oz". Nash became Oz, a gimmick he himself believed would be a failure. He
wore neon green tights, had his hair dyed silver, and walked to the ring in a rubber mask. He was accompanied by
his manager "The Wizard" (Kevin Sullivan under another rubber mask and accompanied by a monkey for some
reason). Oz's WCW debut actually came complete with Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man, The Scarecrow and the Cowardly
Lion, and used a backdrop meant to look like the Emerald City. Although successful against jobbers and mid-card
wrestlers, Nash turned into a tackle dummy for wrestlers such as Ron Simmons and Bill Kazmeier. Finally (and thankfully),
the gimmick was dropped.
Next up for Kevin Nash was a character by the name of Vinnie Vegas; a type
of dice-rolling casino bouncer. Like the previous two gimmicks, Vegas started off well. He defeated former NWA
champion Tommy Rich in under a minute in his debut at WCW's Clash of the Champions XVIII. From there he became
a part of Harley Race's "Half ton of Holy Hell" stable along with Big Van Vader and Mr. Hughes. When
Race began to devote the majority of his time to Vader, Nash sided with Diamond Dallas Page's "Diamond Mind"
stable. Again, no success. In 1993, Kevin Nash's WCW contract expired. It was time for a change.
On June 6, 1993, "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels was challenging
his former tag team partner Marty Jannetty for the WWF Intercontinental championship, the belt Michaels had lost
less than a month earlier. It was on this night that Shawn introduced a new bodyguard by the name of Diesel. This
man was Kevin Nash. Nash (who didn't actually get the name "Diesel" until the King of the Ring later
that month) helped Michaels win back the IC title, and became a big asset for Michaels in every title defence.
In September of that year, Nash started wrestling for himself after Michaels left the WWF briefly. The following
January at the Royal Rumble, Diesel proved to be a force, as he ousted several wrestlers from the Rumble match
before being eliminated by six opponents, one being Shawn Michaels. The two continued their partnership, and on
April 13, 1994, Diesel defeated Razor Ramon for the WWF Intercontinental championship.
Kevin Nash's career skyrocketed from there. In the period of one year he won
the WWF Intercontinental, Tag Team and World Championships. He became the WWF's franchise man, with the Diesel
character receiving mainstream attention in magazines and on television. He was even the subject for an episode
of Robin Leach's "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous". It appeared that Nash's dark days in WCW were behind
him with his superstar status in the WWF.
In March of 1996, Kevin Nash called WWF owner Vince McMahon and announced that
he'd be leaving the WWF upon the expiry of his contract, and he'd be re-signing with WCW. May 19, 1996 would be
his last WWF appearance, as he lost a cage match to Shawn Michaels in Madison Square Garden in New York, after
which the infamous "Kliq Reunion" celebration took place.
A few weeks after his WWF departure, Nash returned to WCW and became an original
member of the wildly successful nWo angle. Nash and the rest of the nWo group helped WCW surpass the WWF in most
categories for the first time. It also helped Nash enjoy WCW success, something he'd been unable to previously.
He formed "The Outsiders" with Scott Hall and captured the WCW tag team titles. He also won the WCW world
title (which he won the first time by ending Goldberg's 170-0 undefeated streak).
Possessed with a witty intellect, Nash's creative barb-filled interviews amuse
with acid-like accuracy. From his Phoenix home, he is a connoisseur of entertainment staying ahead of the latest
trends. He can deliver more than punches with his smooth delivery and perfect timing, which has been showcased
on "Politically Incorrect," "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Sabrina: The Teenage Witch"
and "The Love Boat."
Kevin Nash is at the top of the wrestling world searching for higher conquests.
Big Sexy is more than in the house, he's everywhere.
