Place in History - Daijiro Matsui's name is pretty well-known in MMA and even pro-wrestling circles these days for his efforts in Pride that have been good and bad. Thankfully for him some big showings with Carlos Newton, Vanderlei Silva and Pele have counteracted much of his mediocrity by him desplaying tremendous heart and tenacity. But before all that Shunsuke Matsui was an undercarder in the Kingdom promotion. Back then, he was bald with a sleazy moustache and was at a similiar skill level in the shoot-style. Matsui was sort of the generic undercarder like Yuko Miyato and Wataru Sakata were for the UWF and RINGS respectively. While he had all the fundamentals, Matsui simply lacked the it-factor to make more than the lowest guy on the totem pole in Kingdom. He was a punching bag with them, but the connection to the Takada Dojo got him a job with Pride, where Matsui would make his name known by seizing opportunity.
