History was made in St. Louis as Bill Hands(4-6) tossed a no-hitter and the
St. Louis Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants by the score of 1 to
0.

Hands was cheered on with every out from the 7th inning onward. The
adrenaline had to be just pumping through his veins. The atmosphere was
electric out there in Busch Stadium this afternoon! He walked 4 San Francisco
batters. The St. Louis players and coaches started to leave Hands alone with
his thoughts after the game reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th
inning rolled around, you could hear a pin drop every time he went to his
wind-up - and an explosion after every out. St. Louis had only 4 hits for
the afternoon.

The losing pitcher was Bob Gibson(7-5). 'Not in my wildest dreams did I think
this would happen!' Hands said as he stood at home plate to salute the fans.
'Once I got into the later innings, I decided to challenge every hitter, and
that turned out to be the right decision!'
