History was made in Detroit as Jack Harshman(2-0), with relief help from
Connie Johnson, tossed a no-hitter and the Cleveland Indians defeated the
Detroit Tigers by the score of 7 to 1.
Detroit never recovered after Cleveland took the lead in the 6th inning when
they tallied 2 runs on 1 hit. The key at-bat was by Willie Mays who quieted
the crowd when he smashed a two-run homer (his 5th of the season). The teams
had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Ike Delock(0-2) was the loser. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3
innings. When asked how his stuff was out there, Harshman looked a bit
incredulous (as did this reporter) and replied 'A bit better than average,
I'd have to say'
