WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Eddie Collins robbed Johnny Rawlings of a base hit.
Top 6th: Roger Peckinpaugh robbed Rube Marquard of a base hit.
Rube Marquard(3-3) thrilled the fans at League Park as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Cleveland Indians. The Pittsburgh Pirates won by a
final score of 3 to 0.
Although disappointed to see the hometown team lose, the fans certainly were
appropriately impressed with the dominating, no-hit performance of Marquard.
He surrendered no walks and could have tossed a perfect game if it were not
for the fielding errors. The tension was mounting with every inning after
the 6th. Marquard appeared oblivious himself to the mounting history until
two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he allow himself one deep sigh and a
slow trip around the mound. Pittsburgh banged out 9 on the afternoon.
Mike Regan(3-4) was hit with the loss. 'I gave it everything I had. It's
probably the greatest day of my life,' Marquard said. 'I was out there
focusing on my catcher's glove, that's all. I just concentrated on pitching
my game.'
