Here is how you can make a very cool cannon
That shoots smoke rings up to twenty feet!
Great for hauntings

When a cannon was needed for a stage production my wife and I were directing, what could be cooler than a brightly colored cannon that shoots large smoke rings 20 feet across the stage. This is a fun cannon to play with. You can send invisible smoke rings or more correctly vortex rings that blow out a candle at twenty paces. People are shocked and some even scream when a smoke ring explodes in their face sending their hair flying in every direction. It is almost ghostly. Fantasteeeeeeeck for spooook alleys or haunted houses.

Here is how it is made.

This is what you need to do. Find a cardboard or plastic barrel. The size is only important to what size you wish to make y-our smoke rings. Our barrel was 18" in diameter and we made a hole 6" in diameter in the bottom of the barrel. The bottom of the barrel now becomes the front of the cannon while the top becomes the back. Can't find the lid? Don,t worry you won't need it. Next you need some 1.25 or 1.50 Mil plastic like that used for mulching gardens. The plastic needs to be stretched tightly over the back opening of the barrel. Secure with wide duct tape wrapped around the barrel or cannon so that the plastic is taped securely and air tight around the entire circumference of the cannon. I will leave the frills and decorations up to your imagination. A stick with cloth wrapped tightly around one end of the stick makes an excellent mallot. A sharp strike on the back of the cannon will generate an invisible air ring or vortex. Aim it at some one, strike the drum head and a second or two later the vortex hits with dramatic effect. The energy from striking the drum is stored in the vortex until it is suddenly released upon striking some one. The ring cannon makes a great haunted house prop. I don't want to be politically incorrect so let.s just say that in an evenly mixed group of 50%
male and 50% female 50% of the group will scream when a vortex strikes them. I will leave it to you to figure which group it is. Keep in mind that terrified guys screams can be high pitched and virtually indistinguishable from a girls screams. Adding smoke makes the rings visible and you can watch the smoke rings travel across the room and fly apart when they strike someone. Please be safe adding smoke. My sincere advise is to invest a few dollars in a fog machine. WalMart sells them at Halloween time for around $20 and there are lots of new machines listed on E Bay in the same price range but watch out for excessive shipping charges. You might find a company on the net that offers free shipping. The size of the barrel is not important. You can make a smoke ring canon from an oatmeal box or a fifty five gallon barrel. They will both work. Only the distance they travel and the size of the smoke rings will be affected.
In the 1800's huge multi storied smoke ring cannons were built. They would shoot smoke rings high into the air. It was believed that the smoke rings would trigger rain in drought parched areas.
