I turned 68 in 2007. What does that
mean? It means that I can remember a
time when you had only to walk a short distance to find a pristine
environment free of the sort of trash we find today. In these pristine
areas there were no pop-tops,
beer cans, discarded fishing line, tin foil, plastic
bags, six pack plastic holders or condoms. Year after year the
trash keeps piling up. Worse yet more and more birds, fish and
countless other animals are maimed, crippled and killed by such simple
things as pop-tops, six pack rings and even fishing line. It is a
pitiful thing to see a seagull that lost a leg to a strangling loop of
fishing line or to see fishing line hanging out from a Great Blue
Herron’s mouth. As always it is only a few thoughtless, brain dead,
inconsiderate slobs who mess things up for everyone. It may not be
politically correct to use those adjectives but then I am not
necessarily a politically correct person. I believe in calling a spade
a spade and I certainly don’t believe in putting frosting on a rotten
potato. It has always been and always will be the rule that the few
will mess things up for the many. The military takes advantage of this
rule by punishing everyone when a few or even a single individual
messes up. In a way society is no different than the military. A few
sub humans mess up and the entire population, human and animal, is
punished by increased
taxes and a spoiled environment. The same principle that makes
everybody pay for the negligence and thoughtlessness of the few screw
ups can also be the solution. If a minority of the people who use the
outdoors mess it up then it will only take a few conscientious people
to fix it again. Our family of seven souls has a simple rule that we
follow when we camp or fish or do any outdoor activity. The rule is
simply:
Always take out more than you
brought
in.
If
a portion of the people who use the outdoors would adopt this
rule we would find that a few people could make things right for a lot
of people. That is righteous don’t you think?
Wouldn’t it be nice to have to look long and hard” just to find a bit
of trash so you could say I took more out than I brought in? It’s
possible some day you know. A few years ago I coined a phrase that
certainly fits our times. The phrase is this:
"American all the way but Earthling first!” Or it
could say Englishman or Canadian or Mexican all the way
but
Earthling first! So lets be citizens of the earth first and then
citizens
of our respective countries. After all our Earth is just a tiny bubble
in space and there is nowhere to run if we pop it!
P.S.
I spent two years in Canada and
I am well aware of the fact that Canadians are Americans to but your
own radio, television, news media and magazines all call you Canadians
so please don’t write me a scolding note until those entities start
calling you Americans.
