Self-Portrait

Self Portrait
You have no definition of your own
You define yourself by what you oppose
You are so afraid of being alone
You've run out of friends on which to impose
Everyone warned me so I should have known
It is clear now that your true color shows
You can't hide what your mind already knows
You must pay back what your empty heart owes

You are a blind possessor of your faults
You can't see yours but notice your neighbors
A tremor within begins your assault
As you shake with the fear of showing yours
You hide yourself behind mental walls
I wish you could unlock your fragile doors
And remember how to open the vaults
Your heart will forgive what your mind ignores

Within Me, Beyond Me

Questions, haunting your mind, crushing your bleeding heart
Answers, from nowhere you can hear, tearing at your hallowed soul
Teachings never taught and lessons left for someone else to impart
Were all you ever needed to rise up out of your unholy hole

You are beyond understanding why you are forty and alone
But the confidence missing from your soul is a dark beacon to all
A shadow escaping from you leads to a light you'll never be shown
Warning of the destiny into which you have no choice but to fall

You feel like God has you under his thumb, forcing you to sin
Searching forever for answers writing poems you cannot sing
You won't find what's missing because it's never been within
You fail before you even begin because self-esteem is everything

Blind To The Me Others See
Now I've lost the fabric of my dreams
It's drifted away through the unsown seams
Why can't I envision anymore
Whatever it was I'm still looking for?

And though my friends might never have guessed
I've done so much that needs to be confessed
I'm blind to the me that others see
Unworthy of the trust thrust upon me

And trapped within the endless phony seams
The essence of my art and of my dreams
Would I be better off without them
To be without a single apothegm?

Two Faced
Two Faces Have I
Neither one a smile
Heart broken and lost
Rage covered with frost
Flames douced by tears
Old letters and fears

Constantly Changing
I am costant yet changing
I am myself yet someone else
I am proud yet humble
I am angry yet content

I am lost and found
I am heart and soul
I am free yet bound
I am young yet old

I am happy yet sad
I am brash yet shy
I am good and bad
I can laugh and cry

I know love and hate
I am brave yet craven
And the only excuse I have
Is that I am human

The Man I Am No One Else Knows

What is it about all the girls I meet?
They all love to like me
But no one wants to love me
They act afraid yet say
I'm too nice a guy
So if I'm such a nice guy
I have to question why
Why my heart and mind
Must constantly compete

They call whenever there's something wrong
Not knowing what to do
But I've no one to talk to
I can't handle everyone
Else's problems now
I have enough of my own
Too many of my own
And the change I want to make
Has waited far too long

I'll never be able to win this war
To do so means to change
And I cannot rearrange
Not without risking
Becoming someone else
But if one thousand girls
Put me through one thousand Hells
I'd rather be the man
I never was before

Every Eden Has It's Apples

Every morning when I wake up
I want to leave this nowhere town
I figure somewhere else is better
'cos here I'm always down
Every time I taste paradise
and think I'm finally in
The temptations I give in to
drive me out again

Everyday I try to escape
from this cold reality
I keep running from my bills
and this poverty
Everynight I look for someone,
besides me, that I can blame
No matter where I go,
it'll always be the same

I'll never change my fate
no matter who I pretend to be
And the only alternative
is if I was never me
Even if I shaved my face
and went by a different name
No matter what my guise,
I'll always be the same

10 Things In A Letter To My Past

1: When you move to Schenectady at age 16, seek out BJ and get to know her, she's the one for you.

2: Join the football team in Schenectady and remember, they are no more than what you are.

3: Write poetry, don't wait to meet Renee. She's not the one for you.

4: Neither is Maggie/Margret, forget her, she'll break your heart.

5: Forget Robin too, she isn't worth getting a broken heart over.

6: Forget about Deena, she's ok, but not what you are looking for, not really.

7: Don't go away to college. Go to SC Community College first, for teaching and writing.

8: Stay away from bars, esspecially in December of odd numbered years.

9: Don't invite girls over that you meet talking on the CB radio, including Missy.

10: Give Steve the letter you wrote to him on 1/31/99, no matter what anyone tells you.

Self Portrait
It is not enough to write about others, it would be unfare in fact if I did not look at myself with the same eyes that I see everyone else with. So these poems are my look inward. They are not all encompassing of my inner reflections, but they do at least expose some of my flaws and help me see what I might otherwise choose not to.
