I Wonder Where You're Going, I've Seen Where You've Been!

Where Are You Going? I've Seen Where You've Been!
Where are you going and where have you been?
You've learned nothing at all from all that you've seen
You don't care who you hurt, you don't know what love means
Ain't it funny how life never is as it seems?

You've been hurt and now you ignore the pain
So many times you think you're going insane
There's no way to stop it now, no end to your game
And one day you'll know there's no one else you can blame

With all of your lies and the way that you flew
It's hard to believe you're the girl that I knew
With the life that you've led and with all you've been through
Did you ever wonder what'll become of you?

My fine feathered lover, watch out, beware
Your flight path is less a circle than a square
You've turned all the sharpest corners and cut them all clean
Tell me, where are you going and where have you been?

You used to be such an innocent girl
Your beauty once shined like the whitest of pearls
You love to get sun-tanned while laying on the lawn
But now it is raining and your color's all gone

You'll find yourself living out in the street
Then a pimp will find you and you'll kiss his feet
He'll use you and sell you till you're no good anymore
Then you'll realize what you've become is a whore

Where are you going? I've seen where you've been
Now you've spread your legs and let them all in
Do you know what you're doing? I think it's a sin
But you'll keep on doing it again and again

You dance around like a sweet high class queen
You're sleeping habits are completely obscene
Burning your sheets has become a daily routine
I wonder where you're going, I've seen where you've been

Cold As Ice
I'm a very poor man
My pockets are empty, look not even a cent
All I have left is my room
And I'm bein' evicted 'cos I can't pay the rent

I just can't pay the price
The air has gone stale and I'm facing banishment
This room is as cold as ice
Hey, does anybody got another room for rent?

The warmth has been shut off
There's ice on the bed springs and it's four months till May
I want a permanent loft
And when I move in I won't ever stray

I'd love a bed that's soft
And a landlord that won't throw me out in the cold
One that will say "Love's enough
Here's the key, this room is free; Love is worth more than gold"

I Wish I Wasn't Me
I've always been the good guy
And everyone I meet would like to be my friend
But of all the people in the world
I wish I wasn't me

I would take instead of give
I'd never fall in love again, I'd be one of the users
Never again one of the losers
If I just wasn't me

I could take my life and stop this pain
If I didn't have to face myself, face the inner me
My soul's too strong to defeat
Oh God, please let me be

If I wasn't me
I could ignore her and forget this loss
But I'm not quite strong enough
Love's always been my boss

Now I can't take it anymore
I am losing all my sanity
And the acid in my stomach
Is burning out my brain

Silence is all around me now
I wish the peace surrounding me would enter
I'm certain I would feel better
I wish it would flow through me

But nothing more will ever enter
No love, no peace, no one will ever touch me
I'll never let another rogue
Cut what's left of me

How can I ever be your friend?
You told me it was because I am who I am
That you could tell me all these truths
Oh God, I wish I wasn't me!

Cold As Ice
It all ties together when I was in college and my girlfriend left me for another guy. It was the day of mid term exams when I received a letter from her just before going to class for an exam. Everything was swirling around in my mind after reading the letter. I left class before the exam started, went to the library and wrote this poem. So much for my college education, but I did learn some important lessons in life. JJ

Joyce Carol Oats & Bob Dylan
"Where Are You Going?
I've Seen Where You've Been!"
was inspired in part by a short story written by
Joyce Carol Oats called
"Where Are You Going,
Where Have You Been?"
and the song
"Like A Rolling Stone"
written by
Bob Dylan.
Joyce Carol Oats
dedicated the story to
Bob Dylan
because she'd been inspired to write the story
after listening to his song
"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue".

We were reading
"Where Are You Going,
Where Have You Been?"
in my college English class not long after my girlfriend had sent me a
"Dear John" letter.
It was not written to follow the original short story.

Seeds And Weeds is a philosophically expressive compilation of poetry and prose, creatively expressed in rhyme and reason. The poems within are more than simply a collection of verse with splashes of imagery. Seeds And Weeds challenges the mind and heart to find a better way through observations and feelings on the rise and fall of character.

Written in the moment, the poetry here is sometimes harsh, but always honest. Digging deeply into the essence of poetic creation, they have not been conjured from the casual observations on life that some would accept as poetic inspiration. These works are the raw emotions, articulated in words that have been inspired by a lifetime of experiences. Offering progressive views on equality, justice, politics, peace, war, environment, nature, fate, faith, family, friendship, introspection, and poetic inspiration, this book explores the struggle between human instinct, intellect and compassion.
