Chapter 8: Motivation

Goal-setting theory:
Group standards influence personal goal setting
Goals remain close to actual performance, with a tendency to be a bit higher
Success leads to increased goal level
Failure leads to decreased goal level
Most people are intrinsically motivated to reach goals that are challenging and realistic
Extrinsinc rewards can decrease motivation unless they are viewed as recognition for good performance

Social loafing: in a group where individual performance cannot be assessed, individuals don't work as hard as when alone.

Self-handicapping: offering explanation for potential poor performance before performing the task to protect motivation and self-esteem.
