Chapter 4: Development

Parenting styles:
     Parental responsiveness: how supportive and involved parents are in their kids' activities.
     Parental demandingness: how strict and controlling parents are over their kids.

     Authoritarian parents: high in demandingness and low in responsiveness
          Establish strict rules, are controlling
          Kids have low intellectual performance and lack social skills

     Authoritative parents: high in demandingness and high in responsiveness
          Share control with kids
          Kids have higher intellectual performance, are independent

     Permissive parents: high in responsiveness and low in demandingness
          Don't hold kids accountable for their actions
          Kids have poor academic performance, drinking problems, promiscuous sex.

     Rejecting/Neglecting parents: low in demandingness and low in responsiveness
          Don't care about their kids
          Kids have low self-esteem, poor academic performance, are anti-social
