Chapter 12: Social Psychology

For a long time psychologists looked for explanations of thoughts and behaviors inside the person. Social psychologists have shown that the social situation can ahve a very powerful impact.

Social influence: how the situation can change behaviors and attitudes.
     Conformity: People change their behaviors to fit in and not stand out as the odd one.
          Group think: when people feel pressured to reach an agreement even if it means not discussing important issues.
     Compliance: Make people change their behaviors and attitudes.
          Foot-in-the-door technique: start with small request before requested what you want.
          Door-in-the face technique: start with ridiculously large request and then request what you want.

     Cognitive dissonance: discomfort experienced where there is conflict between behaviors and attitudes
