Book 1
While their lips were busy kissing, out of her left ear Xiao Yian Zi suddenly caught the stifled giggles of the people outside. She quickly broke away and with flushed cheeks yelled, " Thief! Who’s out there?" and flew towards the twin wooden doors.
Unfortunately, she forgot that she had her husband, Yong Qi, who was tied to her wedding dress. As she soared up, she was jerked sharply back down as he was dragged along. They both fell with a loud thump on the floor.
"Ah!!! Ack..owww…" she moaned.
"Auuuuunnnnggghhh.." groaned Yong Qi.
"Thief, you won’t get away!" Quickly, she untied the knot that was holding them together and flew at the doors a second time.
The people outside heard the moans and groans and all lined up away from the door so they could welcome the couple when they stepped outside. Instead, the two doors flew open and out came the bride, flying with her hands extended. Of course, there was no one there and she landed face down on the ground with a dull thud. Everyone gasped and hurried to help her up.
"Xiao Yian Zi, are you ok?" asked Jin Suoa worriedly.
"Xiao Yian Zi, did that hurt? Did you break anything?" asked her brother, Xiao Jian.
"Ge Ge, are you hurt?" Cried Ming Yuea.
"Ge Ge, let me take a look to see if you’re ok." Said Tzai Xea worriedly.
"NO, I’m NOT ok, and no I didn’t break anything!" she exclaimed. She brushed off the hands and jumped up. Spinning to face them, she said with eyes flashing, "What are you guys doing outside, huh? Spying? Peeking? There’s nothing to look at!"
The group smiled sheepishly and stared at the ground. Jin Suoa smiled and said sweetly, "No, we weren’t spying or peeking. We were waiting outside, eager to give our congratulations to you two."
"Yes, you and Yong Qi have been in that room so long, not talking to any of the guests, we were starting to get restless." Added Lieu Qing.
"And I wanted to see my sister, to give my congratulations to both you and Yong Qi." Remarked Xiao Jian.
Just as Xiao Jian was commenting, Yong Qi burst out of the room.
"Xiao Yian Zi, I heard a thud, did you fall? Did you catch the thief?" he said worriedly. He stopped in his tracks and seeing that it was Lieu Qing and the others, smiled and wagged his finger at them.
"Ah, it wasn’t a thief, but a bunch of people trying to spy on us!" he said in mock-severity. Seeing that Xiao Yian Zi did indeed fall, he rushed to her and asked, " Are you ok? Does it hurt? Here, let me take a look at you."
She smiled broadly and replied, "I’m fine. Ha, it’s a good thing I came to knock your "party" off, who knows what would’ve happened if I didn’t!" At that, Yong Qi blushed and laughed.
Xiao Jian, seeing Yong Qi’s features and understanding men, placed both his hands on their shoulders and smiled.
"Yong Qi and Xiao Yian Zi, congratulations. Finally, you two are able to live in happiness and peace. May your years be long and wonderful, having happiness and children every season!"
"Ah?’ exclaimed Xiao Yian Zi with wide eyes. ‘ Children EVERY season? That’s ridiculous! I’ve never known anyone to have children every season, this palace would be crowded within a year!"
Both Xiao Jian and Yong Qi looked at each other and broke into fits of laughter.
"It’s a chenyu (proverb), Xiao Yian Zi." Said Yong Qi.
"Oh. You know I’m poor at chenyu, why use it then? It can only confuse me. But I promised you and myself to learn it, and that’s what going to happen." She remarked.
Xiao Jian smiled and looked at his sister.
"Xiao Yian Zi, if Yong Qi ever dares to bully or harass you, tell me, and I’ll set him straight." He said.
"Don’t worry, that will never happen. I wouldn’t because I love her too much." Said Yong Qi.
"And I wouldn’t let him." Added Xiao Yian Zi with a sly smile.
"Well, I hope you two may live to be old and wise, forever faithful to each other and spending "forever" together." Said Lieu Qing and Lieu Hong.
"Xiao Yian Zi, Wu A Ge, may your love forever burn bright, never once flickering throughout life." Said Jin Suoa happily.
It went on like this, until everyone gave their personal congratulations and gratitude. When the last speech was over, Yong Qi said warmly, "Thank you everyone for the speeches and words of thanks. We appreciate it immensely and want all of you to join us tomorrow at Huei Bing Liu with Zi Wei and Er Kang for the big feast."
Xiao Jian nodded, and remarked, "It’s getting late. Time for us to leave you two love birds to find your nest." The group smiled, and saying good-bye, they headed back to their beds.
From a distance, two pairs of eyes watched and observed the gathering in front of them. One pair of feminine eyes watched with an envious sparkle, while the other pair, more masculine, watched with contempt.
"How could Wu A Ge ever set eyes on a person like her?" asked the female, irritated and annoyed.
"I don’t know, but he must be a complete fool to have done that." Replied the male. At this comment, a feminine hand shot up and hit him squarely on the nose. "Ow!" he screeched.
"Serves you right. Don’t ever talk about Wu A Ge as being a fool. If he is a fool, he wouldn’t be the crown prince now would he? I suspect that Xiao Yian Zi has some spell over him, and poor Wu A Ge cannot wake up." Said the other.
"Well, whatever it is, it’s going to be the death of those two yet. Come, we have the night off. Let us go away from here." Said the male, leading his companion away from the bridal chamber.
"Don’t worry Wu A Ge, I’ll save you, I’ll always be there for you, I’ll always love you." Whispered the female to herself as they started walking down the garden path, towards their own quarters.
Xiao Yian Zi and Yong Qi headed back to their bridal chamber. Closing the doors behind him, Yong Qi then went to sit beside his bride on their bed. Taking her hands, he stared into her bright eyes and said softly, "It seems that we never really have time to ourselves lately."
Xiao Yian Zi nodded in response and said, "Ha, even on our marriage night, they spy on us and then try to cover it up by giving their congratulations. And Xiao Jian with his usual remarks in chenyu. What does that chenyu mean anyway?"
"It means: two couples that love and respect each other all throughout their life, thus resulting in children and more happiness." He said kindly.
"Oh. But I don’t think that we’ll ever lack any of those." She said, giving him a wink.
He smiled back and gazed deeply into her eyes. She stared steadily back, and their lips met and kissed. Oblivion was present, as the lights from within the chamber were put out.

As Xiao Jian was exiting the palace through the twin pagodas, he ran into Qing Er a second time. Both had their heads craned toward the sky, gazing wondrously at the moon and weren’t watching where they where going until it was too late.
"Oh, ommphh! Excuse me, I-" began Xiao Jian.
"Oh! No no, I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking wh-" continued Qing Er.
Both looked up to see whom they bumped into and their eyes widened in surprise when they saw each other’s faces.
"Qing Er!"
"Xiao Jian!" both said in unison.
They were quiet for a split second and then broke into laughter.
"I think the moon will be the death of me yet." Xiao Jian said with a broad smile.
"Yes, many people have lost their lives do to gazing at the moon; mainly due to unfortunate run-ins like this one." Replied Qing Er with her own smile.
"Unfortunate? Some run-ins are meant to be in life, I think it’s all fate’s work at hand." Said Xiao Jian.
"I mean unfortunate for the people who died because of them." Said Qing Er with a wink.
Xiao Jian smiled. "Ok, ok. Let’s ‘same as, same as’ then. So, where were you going before our "unfortunate" run-in?" he asked.
"Nowhere really, Lao Fu Yai is already asleep, I was just walking around the palace." She said.
"I see. Well, would it interest Qing Ge Ge to accompany me out of the palace and to go moon-gazing for a while?" he asked.
At this Qing Er blushed and smiled. "I suppose she could." She said shyly.
They exited the palace, and started walking along the dirt path. Both walked in silence for a while, until they reached a clearing lush with grass and shrubs, and there were smooth slabs of rocks lying around that serve as seats.
Qing Er gazed around her with bright eyes. "Wow, this place is beautiful! You can see the moon and the sky clearly here." She exclaimed.
Xiao Jian nodded. "Indeed. This was my first among many discoveries that I made when I first came to Beijing. I was just walking around the countryside, getting to know the land and what it yielded. It soon became dark and I had come across this clearing, attracted by the luminous light the moon shone on it. I often visit this place by myself whenever I’m in Beijing. I guess you can call it a ‘a get-away spot.’" He said quietly.
Qing Er stared at him steadily; she had never met a man so sensitive and "alive" as Xiao Jian. And there was another thing too, this unknown feeling she had for him, which always made her happier than she had ever felt when she was around him.
" ‘First of many discoveries’? What other discoveries did you make when you came here?" she asked.
"I discovered my parent’s killer was still alive, I discovered my sister was alive, I discovered friendship and gratitude through Er Kang, Zi Wei, Yong Qi, and Xiao Yian Zi, I discovered how to forgive, I discovered how to sell shi ztes, and…"
"And?" she asked.
"And I discovered you, truly indeed the only most unique and gifted lady on the face of the earth." He said earnestly.
Upon him saying this, Qing Er’s eyes lit up and her cheeks became a dark red, as did Xiao Jian’s. Quickly, she walked toward one of the rock slabs and sat down. She looked up, and gazed at the moon with shining eyes that told Xiao Jian thousands of unspoken words. He walked toward the rock slab and sat next to Qing Er and he too, gazed at the moon with eyes shining. They sat like this for hours, quiet yet sharing unspoken words, both mesmerized by the moon and enjoying each other’s company all the more.
It was an hour before dawn when Xiao Jian and Qing Er arrived back at the palace gates.
"That was one of the most pleasant and happiest evening I have ever spent in my life." Remarked Qing Er.
"Mine as well." Said Xiao Jian. "I must leave now, but I will see you again at the feast?" he asked.
Qing Er nodded and smiled. "Yes, see you there."
"Good-bye." With that, he turned around and walked towards the city, where Lieu Qing and the others were sleeping.
Qing Er continued to stare at him, until he couldn’t be seen, and then she turned and walked along the palace garden path. Having taken no more than two steps, she started, and began running towards Lao Fu Yai’s place. She had forgotten that she was to help Lao Fu Yai get dressed for the mornings' breakfast ceremony concerning the new bride and groom.
