Heathen
Breaking The Silence

This is the debut album for Heathen, a Thrash Metal band from the late '80s/early '90s. They recently reformed, which is good news. Anyways, this album starts off with the brilliant Death By Hanging, which is fast, catchy, and it has some great lead guitar work. The next song, Goblins Blade, starts off with a slower riff, then gets fast again. The third track, Open The Grave, begins with a riff that sounds slow like the beginning of Goblins Blade, but also has a frantic solo like the beginning of Death By Hanging. Then, there's a really weird-sounding vocal thing as the singer(s?) sings at a lower pitch, then raises pitch to really high vocals. It reminds me of Al when he's getting a boner, which is bad. But the rest of the song is okay again, though the riffs don't impress me as much as the last two songs. Then after Open The Grave is the song Pray For Death, which starts off really fast again, then goes into a short but sweet guitar solo before the lyrics start. Then the next song Set Me Free comes on. It sounds different from the other material on the album a bit, but not all that much. It's a Sweet cover, so that's probably why.

Next up is the title track. It has a weird-like intro riff, then gets really fast. The album is still good, but the songs are starting to sound a bit formulaic, which is bad. Still good, but it takes a few listens to be able to tell all the songs apart. Oh yeah, later on in the song is yet another kickass lead guitar break, which is common throughout the album. At one point in the solo, it starts to sound like this one song I heard once. I dunno the name of the song, but it goes like "Doo doo doo doo DOO Doo, doodoodoodoodoo- HEY!". I think it's a Jewish song, but I'm not sure. Then the solo ends, and the song goes back to thrashy stuff. The song fades out, then Worlds End come on, with some acoustic and electric guitar playing at the same time. It sounds good. It reminds me of a pirate cave that's up in the sky, then it rockets to Mars while farting at the same time when the fast Thrash Metal comes in. It's a nice epic fart song. The chorus is really catchy. Then the last song, Save The Skull, comes on. It starts out just like any other song, and sounds normal, but there's a slight foreboding that this is the last song on the album. Near the end, it gets to a really thrashy part with a nice cymbal thingy with the drums (I'm no drum expert :p), then a drum roll as the song slows down, then builds up in speed to the closing part of the album. It ends with two high guitar notes.

Overall, this is a great album, though like most good Metal albums, you need to listen a few times to take everything in. You might be wary to buy this album, but why buy it when it's
downloadable for FREE?!? YAAAAAAAAAY! You can also download Victims Of Depression, their second album. I'll review VOD sometime in the future. If you don't wanna dowload all of Breaking The Silence (because you're a lazy shit), then here are a few of my reccomended tracks to try first:

Death By Hanging
Pray For Death
Set Me Free
Worlds End

So that concludes this review. \m/
