The
classic 16-bit game has made its way to Nintendo 64,
keeping all the fun and excitement of the first with
better graphics, character voices, and cinematic
sequences. Star Fox 64 includes four-player action as
well as the single player story-based campaign. Over land
or in outer space, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy
Hare, and Slippy Toad battle it out with the forces of
Andross.
The story mode includes 15 stages, lots of 3-D
animated scenes, along with hidden missions and 23
speaking characters. You are Fox McCloud, as you try to
stop the invading forces of the almighty Andross into the
Lylat system. Falco,
Peppy and Slippy serve as your wingmen. They will help
you along the way giving vital information and accessing
bonus areas, so don't let them get blown out of the sky.
There are three vehicles for missions; the Arwing, the
Landmaster Tank and a submarine called the Blue Marine.
You travel from Corneria to different sectors of space
and planets fighting of the imposing forces. Your final
destination is Venom, where Andross awaits. There are
different ways to complete the missions which will take
you on different routes to Venom. The game's graphics and
cinematic sequences are very stunning. The sound is a
little weak, but the voices are clear and a nice addition
to the game (with the exception of Slippy, who is so
annoying with his little kid voice, you usually end up
blasting him out of the air). The game itself isn't very challenging,
even on the hardest path, but in each stage you can earn
medals by shooting down a certian number of enemies. If
you collect all 15 medals, you will be able to play the
Landmaster Tank in Versus Mode, and an expert level
appears. In the expert level, each mission has more
enemies and tougher bosses.
The rumble pak is pretty cool and makes a nice
addition to the game. The rumble pak uses different
degrees of vibration to simulate hits, crashes, boosts,
and bombs, making you feel like your in the game.
In Versus Mode, up
to four players choose from the four main characters. The
battle takes place in a 3-D arena, both on land and in
the sky with players trying to eliminate their opponents.
There are three versions of Versus Mode. In Battle Royal,
the last player alive wins the game. In Point Match,
players compete for a preset number of kills. In Time
Trial, players try and kill the most computer enemies in
a set amount of time. The Versus Mode is very fun, giving
players a chance to annihilate human opponents.
Star Fox 64 is one of Nintendo's best games out right
now. The game provides lots of variety and great graphics
along with the cinematic sequences, and still retains
good play control making it a great game.
