WHAT IS APITHERAPY? (BEE VENOM THERAPY) Bee venom stimulates the immune system and has both local actions and systemic effects. Locally bee venom has strong anti-inflammatory effects and also a strong action on the nociceptive system (this is the part of the nervous system responsible for the transmission of pain impulses). The central action of bee venom involves stimulation of the pituitary gland which leads to increased ACTH secretion and subsequent elevation of plasma cortisol levels (through adrenal cortex stimulation). Cortisol is 100 times more potent as an anti-inflammatory agent than hydrocortisol when tested in rats with arthritis (Nature, Nov. 1974). Cortisone, the synthetic version of Cortisol, is prescribed by physicians to treat inflammation. Bee venom also leads to elevated levels of serotonin and dopamine. The combined effect of the central actions is therefore anti-inflammatory and pain reducing. Central stimulation is most likely also the cause of the general increased sense of well being of those patients treated with bee venom. |
