Kiosks with qat sellers, customers and gunmen  aside  the road  from Sayun to Tarim.Traditional and popular mild narcotic, qat is legally cultivated and taxated in Yemen. Chewing qat leaves (the small fresh and tender tops  of the plant are estimated of premium quality) consists a daily ritual for men (in certain cases women, either young and old, were also noticed to chew) central  in social life of Yemen.Given the tough everyday living conditions in  most parts of the country, qat, apart from a natural stimulant is rather the "pain-killer" of choice for any mental down or physical soreness
....checking the quality in the middle of the road,,,,
With a soldier from the military  escort  on the way from Al-Mukalla to Aden.Sort of military or police escort  was present in few  parts of the tour but there was no problem at all.Despite their obvious relationship with guns,in most cases Yemeni people were very friendly with "Yunan" (Greek) people and in most cases were glad  to pose for/with them.DO NOT CLICK,just DRAG on photo and WAIT for pop-up text and background picture to appear
