WELCOME TO YVONNE'S PAGE ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SAMOYED |
A BREIF HISTORY: Samoyedes were a nomadic people who were hunters and reindeer herdsman. Their prized Bjelkier dogs could be counted on to fall in equally well as either hunter or herdsman, and in addition fill in as a sled dog. |
THE BJELKIER WAS RE-NAMED: The Bjelker was re-named the Samoyed (pronounced SAM A YED'), after the people from whom they came, by the English zoologist Ernest Kilburn-Scott. It isn't clear whether the Samoyede people had a breeding program, but we do know that the beautiful fluffy white Samoyed dates as far back as one thousand years before Christ, setting it among the world's oldest known breeds. |
TEMPERMANT Since Samoyeds are gentle and fun-loving dogs, they make the perfect companions for children. Basically a working dog, the Samoyed presents a picture of strength and beauty. |
RELATIONSHIP WITH MAN Through constant close relationships with man over the centuries, there evolved a rugged breed that would work toe-to-toe with man, lend comfort in the home, fight fiercely in battle, and work side-by-side with the master it was his desire to please. The Samoyed will NEVER take orders subserviently. He is not a submisive breed, but is very eager to please and learn. |
The Samoyed is known as "The Dog with the Smiling Face". |
