Cooking

• Epicurious.com Website run jointly by Gourmet and Bon Appetit. Just about the only recipe site you'll ever need. Before the web, when I used to take magazines, my family got Gourmet. The new editor has almost ruined it, taking it down from the glory days of the 1980's. (Say whatever you want about "greed" and the politics of the day, the 1980's, when everyone wanted to imitate the old rich--that's what "yuppie-ism" was--was a high water-mark for haute cuisine, classic-styled clothing, and production values in consumer goods.)

News and Politics

• Free Republic The rolicking right-wing news discussion site where "Buckhead" broke the story that the 'memos' used in the 60 Minutes II report questioning President Bush's Texas ANG service record were amateurish forgeries made with MS Word default settings. Item number 11 in a digest of the members' analyses of the bogus memos to be forward to CBS's 'Blue Ribbon' panel is largely based on my posts. The posters are mostly "paleo-conservatives" with a fair sprinkling of neo-cons, libertarians and the occasional liberal and tin-foil-hatted conspiracy theorist thrown in for good measure.
• Antiwar.com Well, the name says it all, but this is not your typical left-wing "down with captialism" pacifist site. It is run by a selection of anti-war types ranging from real old-fashioned right-wing isolationsists to the more usual leftists and libertarians. It's a good place to get news even for those of us who generally support the war on terrorism, but have a queasy feeling about America having become the Empire.
• BBC News Does this need any explanation?
• Economist.com Back when I subscribed to lots of magazines, The Economist was the only news magazine I took. Now thanks to a gift from my wife, I'm a subscriber again. The very pragmatic European, but generally pro-American, outlook it provides is a nice balance to the American liberal media and American talk-radio, both of which tend to be a bit narcissistic.

Religion

• Romanity.org Website of the late Fr. John Romanides (Memory eternal! Memory eternal! Memory eternal!). If you grew up in America, it's probably the case that everything you know about Church history and the Middle Ages is false. (Well, not quite, but most of the basic suppositions are.) Visit this site to find out why.
• The Prologue from Ochrid The classic compendium of lives of the Saints by St. Nikolai Velimirovic, listings for saints commemorated in January through August are available as of 28 September 2001 .
• The Orthodox Christian Foundation useful links to other Orthodox sites and edifying reading.
• Eighth Day Books On Line The website of Wichita Kansas's jewel of a bookstore, with probably the best selection in the US of Orthodox Christian books under one roof.
• The Antiochian Archdiocese homepage for the Self-Ruled North American exarchate of the Patriarchate of Antioch (evidently 'self-ruled' is not equivalent in Arabic to 'autonomous', hence the recent meddling in its affairs by the Patriarchate to the sorrow of the faithful here in North America), the Archdiocese which I serve as a subdeacon.
• The Orthodox Church in America homepage of the (autocephalous) Orthodox Church of America.
• The Greek Archdiocese homepage for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, the North American exarchate of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Includes links to the Orthodox World News.
• ROCOR homepage of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia. Two on-line publications of this fervently traditional Orthodox jurisdiction can be found at Orthodox America and The Orthodox Family (back- issues only).

Miscellany

• Hexwar.com Wargames! Before World of Warcraft, before Magic: the Gathering, before Mortal Kombat, before even Dungeons and Dragons, there was hex-grid wargaming. Back in the day it was a pain: you had to spend half an hour sorting and setting up the counters before you could play, and unless you went to a convention, you only had the three other military-history nerds at your high school (or twelve at your college) to play against. Now, thanks to the wonderful work of a small crew of computer programmers, who also happen to be old-school gamers, in Scotland, there are hundreds of opponents all over the world to play, and the counters are mostly set-up, virtually, on your computer. Check it out at Hexwar. • If, contrary to Sean Cubitt's claim, you've been jiving to Walther van der Vogelweide's medieval Palestinalied, and want to know the lyrics in English instead of Middle High German, I finally tracked down a translation: Partial translation of Walter van der Vogelweide's Palestinalied (J.W. Thomas, translator) with comments on which stanzas performed by various neo-medieval and goth bands.
