Believe: A Site for Cultural + Political Resistance
In the current age of global connectedness, the ties that link the world are often the ties that constrict and suffocate. Despite an unprecedented dissemination of information world wide, there is a dearth of creative ideas . The sale of ideology by powerful governments through various media has constructed a climate of fear and has commodified the war of the rich against the poor and disenfranchised under the rubric of the "War on Terror". Needless to say, this demagogic slogan perversely distorts the fact that war is terror. The War on Terror is a war of ideology and has become the touchstone not only of militarism in the post-September 11th world, but of economic imperialism, capitalist exploitation and xenophobia. To resist against this onslaught does not mean that a singular counter-hegemonic ideology should prevail, but rather, that critical and creative thought should be allowed to flourish. Indeed, it is thoughtful reflection that produces sustainable change; however, such reflection requires malleable ideas responsive to changing conditions. Not one idea, but rather, a diversity of tactics - as varied as the constituent actors vying for progressive social change - is essential to the process of building a more inclusive and equitable society. The specialization of knowledge has allowed us to delve into the most micro and macro-levels of human experience; however, it has in turn circumscribed the scope in which we act and creatively engage. Accordingly, an effective strategy of resistance calls for a multi-disciplinary approach to social change incorporating scientists, artists, political and social activists, lawyers, academics and others - specialists and generalists alike. The construction of another world requires vision, innovation and inspiration. This site hopes to provide some inspiration to those engaged in the struggle of resisting against the oppression of dominant ideology and to stimulate debate among those who resist differently, those who avoid resistance or those who simply believe in oppression (albeit under another name). I also suggest art as a currency of social activism and as a provocation for further discussion. The songs that I have produced are an expression of my concern. I encourage your comments and welcome your criticism as this is the nature of the dialectic. e
