Natural hazards happened in the sea or ocean is the least destructive compared to the natural hazards occurring on land or in the sky. However, it is still much being studied on how to prevent the destructive aftermath of the natural hazards caused by the movement of the oceanic plates beneath the oceans. Today, the most natural hazards caused by the oceanic plates is none other than the Tsunami. When created, the tsunamis can rose nearly to 40 m high, sweeping over hundreds of settlements and drowning more than 30,000 people in the coastal areas.

TSUNAMI

tsunamiTsunami is a gigantic wave producedby a sudden change in the ocean floor as a result of earthquakes, underwater landslides, and underground volcanic eruptions. These sudden changes can happen as far away as Alaska, Japan, or South America. A tsunami is a series of waves 10-30 minutes apart and several miles can separate them. The first wave usually is not the largest. But the later waves can form a deadly wall of water that rises more then 100 feet high as it approaches a harbor.

An automatic sign that a tsunami is coming is when there is a local earthquake, especially one that causes you to fall. This is a natural sign that a tsunami is coming. When the shaking stops, then immediately go to a shelter and get out of evacuation zones. Do not wait for evacuation warning because it may too late.

Another sign that a tsunami is coming is when the water disappears, exposing the ocean floor and fish. Another clue is if you see a huge gigantic wave coming at the island. If you are not inside and are by tall things that may cause injury if it falls, get away because chances are that it may fall on you and injury you or even kill you.
