| Remember the old TV programme CHIPS, about two motorcycle cops in California, fighting crime, wearing sunglasses- and generally making growing up in Northern Ireland seem bloody awful!!. Well at last you too can take part! Over the past week or so transmissions from the CHP have been received here in Western Europe at surprisingly good strength. What more do you need to sweep away the winter blues?. A plane ticket to L.A.- no can do!, but heres all you need to know to catch a great piece of scanner skip while the atmospheric conditions hold out. |
| The CHP use the 39 and 42mhz bands for their base to car and bike transmissions- listed below are all their base offices and the Frequencies they use. I have not listed the mobile frequencies since these will be of a much smaller power output and therefore much more unlikely to make it way over here. However there is a link to a comprehensive Frequency listing at the bottom of the page. The CHP use an identifying office number during transmissions, so once you know you are hearing them it's relatively easy to identify which one you are listening to. For instance "79-63" will mean office 79 calling car 63-check the number out on the list and hey presto it's West L.A.! The signals arrive around 16:00 and fade out after sunset. Watch out for signals with fast fading on them this is a dead giveaway that you are in luck. There is much U.S. traffic being heard on these two bands right now so keep your ears peeled- listen out for road and interstate numbers and place names- see my other page on identifying U.S. signals here - and most importantly the office number- GOOD LUCK!. |

| Those offices underlined have been heard by me Jan/ Feb/ March 2002.Those appearing most often at the moment are those on 39 mhz- anytime between 15:30 and 19:30 utc. March 15th saw a huge opening toward CA with many new offices heard. |
