Ontonagon County is over 1,300 square miles of forests, lakes, streams and Lake Superior shoreline. Most of Ontonagon County is public land with some of most breathtaking scenery in the Midwest.
Michigan's largest state park, the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness Park, cover nearly 60,000 acres, 92 square miles of Ontonagon County. The terrain is rugged and beautiful, and accessed by a network of hiking trails. Campsites, shelters and cabins are available throughout the park. A modern campground is located on Union Bay, and semi'rustic camping is provided at Presque Isle Falls.
Ontonagon County gets an average of 150 inches of snowfall annually. The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Ski Area has powertilled runs through magnificent old-growth forests, with spectacular views of Lake Superior. The Park maintains 30 miles of groomed Nordic trails that challenge and reward the adventurous skier. Over 130 miles of groomed snowmobile trails cover the county.

PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS
Porcupine Mountains was established as a Michigan State Park in 1944 to protect the last extensive tract of oldgrowth forest remianing in the Midwest. At nearly 60,000 acres, it is Michigan's largest state park, and one of the Midwest's largest wilderness areas. To the native Ojibwa people, the well worn chain of mountains rising from the waters of Lake Superior reminded them of Kag, the woodland Porcupine. The mountain range they called,Kag-wadjjiw, the Porcupine Mountains. Fifteen years before the Civil War, miners searched for copper in the Porcupine Mountains. Landlookers followed, cruising the forests for pine and cedar. Today, visitors are drawn to the Mountains for their majestic forests, striking geologic formations, wildlife, waterfalls, and boundless backcountry opportunities.
PRESQUE ISLE'S MANABEZHO FALLS
The Presque Isle Scenic Area is located at the west end of the Porcupine Mts. State Park. The Presque Isle River tumbles over numerous waterfalls.
